What is a web accessibility specialist?

A Web Accessibility Specialist is a professional who ensures that websites and digital content are usable by people with disabilities. Their work involves evaluating websites for compliance with accessibility standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and making recommendations for improvements. They may use tools and manual testing to identify barriers for users with visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive impairments. Web Accessibility Specialists often collaborate with designers, developers, and content creators to implement accessible solutions. Their goal is to create inclusive digital experiences that meet legal requirements and best practices.

What does a web accessibility specialist do?

As a web accessibility specialist (WAS), your job is to test the website of your employer and ensure it meets the design compliance standards required for web accessibility. In your role as a WAS, you may create new documentation and training materials, mentor staff, and otherwise manage and implement web accessibility. Specialists in this field often work as contractors instead of full-time employees. You may travel locally or nationally to meet with clients and help address their specific needs. This job title refers to web accessibility in the sense of website and application design and should not be confused with jobs that evaluate access to the internet.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web accessibility specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Accessibility Specialist, you need a strong understanding of web standards, accessibility guidelines (like WCAG), and front-end development skills, often supported by experience in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related certifications (such as CPACC or WAS). Familiarity with accessibility evaluation tools (like Axe, WAVE, or JAWS) and experience conducting audits are typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills help specialists collaborate with developers and communicate recommendations effectively. These skills ensure digital products are usable by all individuals, comply with legal requirements, and provide an inclusive user experience.

How does a web accessibility specialist typically collaborate with designers and developers to ensure accessible digital experiences?

Web Accessibility Specialists work closely with both designers and developers throughout the project lifecycle. They provide guidance during the design phase to ensure that wireframes and mockups consider accessibility best practices, such as color contrast and keyboard navigation. During development, they often review code, conduct accessibility testing (using tools and manual techniques), and offer remediation suggestions. This collaborative approach helps integrate accessibility seamlessly into digital products and fosters a team culture that prioritizes inclusive user experiences.
