Web Accessibility Developer Remote information

What is a web accessibility developer?

Web Accessibility Developers are professionals who specialize in designing and coding websites and applications that are usable by people with disabilities. Their work ensures compliance with accessibility standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), making digital content perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust for all users. As remote workers, they collaborate with design and development teams to audit, remediate, and implement accessible features, often using tools to test compatibility with assistive technologies. Their efforts help organizations create inclusive digital experiences and meet legal requirements for accessibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web accessibility developer?

To thrive as a Web Accessibility Developer, you need a strong understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), often backed by experience in front-end development and accessibility auditing. Familiarity with tools like screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA), accessibility testing frameworks, and ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective remote communication skills help you collaborate with teams and ensure inclusive digital experiences. These competencies ensure that websites are accessible to all users, comply with legal requirements, and provide a better user experience.

What are the most common challenges faced by remote web accessibility developers, and how can they overcome them?

Remote Web Accessibility Developers often face challenges such as staying updated with evolving accessibility standards, effectively communicating technical requirements to cross-functional teams, and ensuring consistent accessibility testing across various devices and platforms. Overcoming these challenges involves proactively participating in accessibility communities, utilizing collaborative tools for documentation and feedback, and regularly attending virtual training sessions. Building strong relationships with designers and developers through clear communication also helps in integrating accessibility best practices throughout the development process.

Job description

ABOUT SPHINX

Sphinx builds software to solve complex national security problems in Space. Founded by engineers and technologists with deep experience across commercial and defense technology, we were frustrated by the outdated and insecure technology America's service members are forced to rely on. We're here to do better.

We're focused on building modern, scalable products with an emphasis on using open source technologies. Expect talented, motivated, and interesting colleagues who emphasize collaboration, transparency, and individual responsibility.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Sphinx is hiring a DevOps Engineer to join our team building a cutting edge communications platform for US government satellites. We're looking for an experienced DevOps Engineer to help take our build and deployment automation to the next level. As a DevOps Engineer you will help build the development and deployment infrastructure used by our Space Communications team, which provides infrastructure for a wide variety of US Government satellites.
