Position Description
The Software Architect will assist migrating legacy tools to the cloud while delivering new capabilities built upon decades of environmental science and celestial studies to increase the immediate awareness and risks to DoW Infrastructure and Systems, advancing Space Weather Forecasting capabilities.
Provides architectural and big picture oversight for development of new or enhanced products. Articulates the architectural vision, conceptualizes and experiments with alternative architectural approaches, creates models and component and interface specification documents, and validates the architecture against requirements and assumptions. Work with various product developers, product managers, and customer application experts to create software products containing required features and modifications. Provide technical advice to other departments within the organization and may be responsible for integrating components built by product developers. May lead a team of planning analysts responsible for research and technical assistance for a user group. Works without supervision on highly complex projects. Wide latitude for independent judgment. Highly skilled with extensive proficiency and a firm understanding of the following: Cloud deployments, DevOps, Software Development and Modern UI Frameworks.
Qualifications Required
โ€ข Bachelor's degree with 12+ years of experience in a software engineering related field
โ€ข Minimum of 6+ years of progressive experience in software development, including at least 3 years as a Software Architect or IT Systems Architect. Must demonstrate extensive knowledge of software and application design principles, architectural best practices, and related frameworks.
โ€ข This position requires the candidate possess a minimum of Secret clearance with the ability to obtain TS/SCI should one be required.
โ€ข Proficiency in software development and coding across various languages such as: Java, JavaScript, C/C++, Python, FORTRAN, etc.
โ€ข Strong understanding of modeling and engineering methodologies such as Unified Modeling Language (UML) and of Department Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF).
โ€ข Experience designing modern applications optimized for deployment in an AWS Cloud environment.
Qualifications Desired
โ€ข Active TS/SCI
โ€ข Recent experience with AI tools such as Claude, Copilot, IRIS, OpenAI, etc.
โ€ข Recent experience supporting the Department of War (DoW), U.S. Space Force, Space Systems Vehicles (e.g., satellites), or similarly complex systems such as those found in aerospace engineering.
โ€ข Strong technical mindset with exceptional attention to detail, along with high-quality organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
โ€ข Proven ability to analyze and decompose complex scientific or operational requirements into actionable software features for implementation by development teams.
โ€ข AWS Certified Solutions Architect or equivalent experience in designing and deploying cloud-based systems using Amazon Web Services.
