Draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis.
Reporting Structure: Reports to the Director of Laboratory Services
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education
High School diploma or GED Equivalent.
Work Experience
Some venipuncture experience required.
License/Certification
Certification by a nationally recognized organization required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Verifies test requisitions as printed on labels before specimen collection; brings discrepancies to the attention of ordering personnel or laboratory technical staff.
Verifies patient by matching two unique identifiers with patient armband or verbal information from potential donor.
Obtains blood specimens by performing appropriate venipuncture method.
Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures and good technique policies.
Collects timed specimens according to the printed label time with a 10 minute leeway.
Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating and noting times of collection on the specimens.
Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule.
Maintains safe, secure and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the clinician, nursing station or ordering clinic. Refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification and notifies technical staff or supervisor of unresolved orders.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Prolonged periods of standing and walking
Must be able to lift, push and pull up to 40 pounds during a scheduled work shift.
Must be able to see with corrective eye wear if needed
Must be able to hear clearly with assistance if needed
May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases
Able to handle emergency and/or crisis situations
May be required to wear protective equipment as necessary
Transferring, repositioning patients.
Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching for patient care functions
Ability to perform effectively in a stressful and fast-paced environment
Ability to pass all required health and other screening tests including random and reasonable suspicion drug screens
