What is weapons manufacturing?

Weapons manufacturing is the process of designing, producing, and assembling various types of weapons and defense equipment, such as firearms, ammunition, explosives, and military vehicles. This industry involves advanced engineering, strict safety protocols, and adherence to government regulations. Weapons manufacturers typically work closely with military organizations, law enforcement agencies, and sometimes private security firms to supply high-quality, reliable equipment. The field requires expertise in metallurgy, mechanical engineering, quality assurance, and often includes research into new technologies to improve weapon performance and safety.

How to get a job in weapons manufacturing?

The qualifications and skills that you need to get a weapons manufacturing job depend on the responsibilities of your position. Weapons engineering jobs require at least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering or science subject. Specializations for this field include computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or ballistic engineering. Assemblers and technicians need at least a high school diploma or vocational degree. Some employers prefer to hire weapons manufacturing professionals with previous military experience or training. Design jobs related to the military require that you obtain a security clearance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in weapons manufacturing?

To excel in weapons manufacturing, you need strong mechanical aptitude, understanding of manufacturing processes, and often a background in engineering or skilled trades. Familiarity with CAD software, CNC machinery, quality control systems, and knowledge of industry regulations or relevant certifications (such as ITAR or ISO) is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to safety are crucial soft skills in this field. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure products meet strict safety, quality, and legal standards in a highly regulated and precise industry.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in weapons manufacturing roles?

Professionals in weapons manufacturing often encounter challenges related to maintaining strict safety and quality standards, as the industry is highly regulated. Adhering to detailed protocols and documentation is essential to ensure compliance with government and international regulations. Additionally, working collaboratively with engineers, quality assurance teams, and supply chain partners is crucial to meet tight production deadlines and manage complex projects. Adapting to rapidly evolving technology and security requirements can also be demanding, but it offers valuable opportunities for skill development and career advancement.

Job description

Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on leading and executing mechanical design efforts for torpedo test equipment modernization projects. You will design and develop electromechanical assemblies and components, support both legacy system modifications and new product development, and work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver robust, testable, and manufacturable solutions. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to advanced sonar, weapons systems, and underwater technology programs within a highly collaborative and technically challenging environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support mechanical design efforts for torpedo test equipment modernization projects.
  • Design electromechanical assemblies, components, fixtures, and interfaces that meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability requirements.
  • Develop detailed 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks, applying appropriate GD&T practices.
  • Translate customer requirements into practical and innovative mechanical design solutions.
  • Support modifications to legacy systems as well as the development of new products and test equipment.
  • Collaborate closely with systems, software, electrical, and test engineers to ensure integrated, cohesive designs.
  • Create comprehensive design documentation, including technical reports, presentations, and complete engineering packages.
  • Generate and maintain bills of materials (BOMs) and fabrication documentation to support procurement and manufacturing.
  • Support prototype integration, testing, troubleshooting, and implementation of design changes based on test results and feedback.
  • Interface regularly with customers, vendors, technicians, and internal engineering teams to clarify requirements and resolve technical issues.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously with limited oversight while maintaining schedule and quality standards.
  • Serve as a technical point of contact for assigned programs, providing subject-matter expertise and status updates.
  • Support products through design, build, and test phases, ensuring successful validation and verification of mechanical performance.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Level 2: 3–5 years of mechanical design experience.
  • Level 3: 5+ years of mechanical design experience.
  • Proven experience designing electromechanical products or systems.
  • Strong SolidWorks experience creating both 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings.
  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience supporting products through design, build, and test phases.
  • Ability to develop detailed manufacturing drawings and documentation.
  • Experience working alongside electrical, software, or systems engineers on integrated projects.
  • Strong technical writing skills for creating reports, documentation, and presentations.
  • Effective verbal communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and customer interaction.
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of projects, and manage multiple assignments.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Secret Clearance.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Creo and willingness to learn and work primarily in SolidWorks.
  • Background in defense or aerospace projects, particularly involving sonar, weapons systems, or underwater technology.
  • Experience with prototyping, testing, validation, and troubleshooting of mechanical or electromechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with fluid flow considerations in mechanical design.
  • Experience generating and maintaining bills of materials (BOMs) and fabrication documentation.
  • Experience preparing engineering packages, including design documentation and technical presentations.

Work Environment

This is primarily an onsite role in an office setting, working at a computer and in close proximity to hands-on test and integration activities. You will spend significant time at engineering facilities, including time at NUWC, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and interacting directly with customers and technicians. The position offers flexible scheduling options, including 9/80, 4/10, or 5/8 work schedules, subject to business needs. While there is some hybrid flexibility, the role is predominantly onsite due to the hands-on nature of the work and the need for in-person collaboration and customer interaction. The organization promotes from within and fosters a culture that focuses on results, with a "as long as the work gets done" mentality, while maintaining high standards of technical quality and teamwork.
