Job description

Position: Wealth Advisor

Location: Richmond, VA & Charlottesville, VA

Reports To: Director of Financial Planning & Tax

Department: Financial Planning and Tax

Status: Full-Time | Hybrid Work Environment

FIRM OVERVIEW

Heritage Wealth Advisors is an independently owned Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) that specializes as a multi-family office serving ultra-high-net-worth families, individuals, and institutions. We are dedicated to protecting, growing, and sustaining wealth across generations through deeply personalized, long-term strategies. Our comprehensive services span six financial pillars: Family Office, Financial Planning, Investment Management, Tax Planning, Philanthropy, and Institutions.

Founded in 2005, Heritage is rooted in enduring relationships and guided by a multi-generational mindset. With offices in Richmond, VA, Charlottesville, VA, and Pittsburgh, PA, we deliver thoughtful guidance and fiduciary care through every phase of life and legacy.

ROLE SUMMARY

The Wealth Advisor serves as a pivotal client-facing role, advancing Heritage’s integrated advisory platform. This position is responsible for delivering holistic financial guidance encompassing relationship management, strategic planning, investment oversight, and tax coordination, ensuring clients receive tailored solutions that reflect their long-term objectives.

This is a client-facing role for someone who can combine technical planning expertise, thoughtful relationship management, and strong execution. The Wealth Advisor partners closely with internal teams and external professionals to coordinate planning, tax, investment, and family office deliverables while ensuring client requests are handled with clarity, urgency, and care.

The ideal candidate will bring sound judgment, strong communication habits, and a commitment to Heritage’s collaborative service model. This role reports to the Director of Financial Planning & Tax and will be based in our Richmond office, with regular partnership across Heritage’s broader advisory, investment, operations, tax, and philanthropy teams.

WHO WILL THRIVE HERE

You:

  • Build trust through responsiveness, follow-through, and clear communication with clients and teammates.
  • Enjoy complex planning work and can translate technical details into practical, client-centered guidance.
  • Take ownership of client requests while knowing when to collaborate, delegate, or escalate.
  • Bring a calm, professional presence and handle sensitive family, financial, and tax matters with discretion and sound judgment.
  • Value continuous improvement and are comfortable learning new tools, workflows, and technology-enabled ways of working.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Planning, Tax and Client Service

  • Serve as the primary advisor for assigned client relationships and as a supporting advisor for more complex Family Office relationships.
  • Act as a first line of response for client requests by resolving items directly or coordinating with the appropriate team member and monitoring through completion.
  • Establish and maintain regular client communication and meeting rhythms based on client needs, service expectations, and advisor judgment.
  • Prepare for, lead, and participate in client meetings; ensure thoughtful follow-through and thorough documentation of client interactions in the CRM.
  • Partner with Operations to support smooth onboarding, paperwork completion, account maintenance, and timely processing.
  • Deliver comprehensive planning support across financial planning, tax preparation and projections, investment coordination, estate planning review, and family office services, as applicable.
  • Review estate planning documents and coordinate with external estate attorneys and other professional advisors to align planning recommendations and next steps.
  • Engage with clients’ broader professional teams, including attorneys, CPAs, business managers, boards, and other advisors.
  • Act on behalf of clients in interactions with external third parties, including government agencies and service providers, when appropriate.
  • Support family office work such as bookkeeping review, reporting packages, trust distribution schedules, ILIT Crummey notices, loan tracking, and bill pay coordination, where applicable.
  • Prepare a range of tax forms and returns, including W-2s, 1099s, 1040s, 1041s, 1065s, 990s, and 709s; the expectation is to prepare, not sign.
  • Maintain up-to-date balance sheets and cash flow projections using Tamarac Advisor View and eMoney.
  • Coordinate with other Heritage disciplines, including Investment Advisory, Philanthropy, and Operations, to deliver an integrated client experience.
  • Demonstrate commitment to clients by staying informed about their priorities, interests, and causes that matter to them.

Apprenticeship & Collaboration

  • Escalate internal or client-facing issues early to the Relationship Director and Director of Financial Planning & Tax with clear context and proposed next steps.
  • Partner with Relationship Directors and senior advisors to leverage historical client knowledge and maintain continuity in long-standing relationships.
  • Collaborate across client teams to keep information flowing, align priorities, and deliver a consistent client experience.
  • Train, educate, and supervise associates as appropriate, helping them understand client situations, service expectations, systems, and processes.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing across the firm, particularly in the ultra-high-net-worth and multi-family office space.
  • Experiment with new technology, including AI-enabled tools, to improve accuracy, speed, and consistency while maintaining confidentiality and quality standards.
  • Serve on Heritage task forces or internal initiatives that improve firm efficiency, client experience, quality, and growth.

Professional & Community Engagement

  • Network with peers and professionals in the Richmond market and broader advisory community.
  • Attend firm, client, professional, and community events as appropriate.
  • Engage with relevant professional organizations and maintain an active credentialing and continuing education plan.
  • Identify opportunities to deepen relationships, strengthen Heritage’s visibility, and support thoughtful growth.
  • Serve as a Heritage ambassador in the local community by professionally representing the firm and living our values.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in finance, accounting, economics, business, or a related field.
  • CFP, CPA, or EA designation required
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in financial planning, tax, investment advisory, family office, or a related client advisory role.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage client relationships, communicate clearly, and coordinate complex deliverables across internal and external teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to synthesize information and develop practical recommendations.
  • Client-focused mindset, sound judgment, and discretion when handling sensitive family, financial, tax, and estate planning matters.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through, with the ability to balance quality and pace across multiple client priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and core planning or CRM tools; willingness to learn new systems and technology-enabled workflows.
  • Demonstrated alignment with Heritage Core Values:
    • Collaboration - Partners across teams to share information, align priorities, and deliver consistently.
    • Intellectual Curiosity - Learns continuously, seeks better ways of working, and stays current in a complex industry.
    • Integrity - Exercises sound judgment and discretion with confidential matters.
    • Passion - Brings energy and commitment to helping clients achieve their goals.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Competitive salary and bonus potential, based on experience and performance.
  • Comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life, AD&D, and disability insurance.
  • 401(k) with profit sharing.
  • Partial and/or full financial support for professional development, including certification programs and continuing education, and leadership training.
  • Paid time off (vacation, sick leave, holidays) with flexible scheduling and hybrid/remote work options.
  • Parental leave and family leave policies.
  • Access to firm resources, internal planning services, and networking / thought leadership events.
