Wayfinding Design information

What is wayfinding design?

A Wayfinding Design job involves creating navigational systems that help people efficiently move through physical spaces like airports, hospitals, campuses, and urban environments. Wayfinding designers use signage, maps, symbols, colors, and digital interfaces to guide individuals while enhancing user experience and accessibility. This role requires a mix of graphic design, architecture, psychology, and urban planning to develop clear and intuitive wayfinding solutions.

What are common challenges faced by professionals in wayfinding design?

One of the main challenges in Wayfinding Design is creating solutions that are intuitive and effective for people with diverse needs, including those with disabilities or limited language skills. Designers often need to balance aesthetic considerations with strict functionality and regulatory compliance, especially in complex spaces like hospitals, airports, or urban centers. They must frequently coordinate with architects, facility managers, and other stakeholders to ensure signage and navigation cues integrate seamlessly. Adapting to changing building layouts and continually improving systems based on user feedback are also integral parts of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in wayfinding design, and why are they important?

To thrive in Wayfinding Design, you need strong skills in graphic design, spatial planning, and an understanding of user experience (UX), often supported by a degree in graphic design, environmental design, or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, CAD programs, and relevant signage standards or accessibility guidelines is typically necessary. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with clients and multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure that wayfinding systems are clear, accessible, and effectively guide people through complex environments.

We Are Lucky Strike Entertainment.

Bowling, Arcade, Family Entertainment Centers. One company. Twelve brands. A career built around unforgettable experiences. Hospitality at our core; we put people first by creating meaningful connections and delivering memorable experiences to every guest, every time.

The Art Director, Waterparks & FECs will lead the visual direction and execution of brand and campaign creative across the Waterparks and Family Entertainment Center (FEC) portfolio, including Castle Park. This is a senior, hands-on role responsible for shaping and evolving brand identity, developing high-impact creative, and ensuring consistency across all channels.

This role will concept and create hero and campaign-level creative, while also building scalable design systems and templates that enable efficient execution across the broader team. The Art Director will manage one direct report and oversee the end-to-end creative workflow, ensuring projects are delivered on time and at a high standard.

What You'll Do

Creative Direction & Brand Development

  • Lead the development and evolution of brand identity across Waterparks, FECs, and Castle Park.
  • Concept and execute hero creative for campaigns, seasonal initiatives, and key business moments.
  • Translate business and marketing objectives into compelling, high-performing visual storytelling.
  • Ensure consistency and quality across all creative, maintaining a cohesive brand system.

Campaign & Asset Development

  • Develop campaign creative across digital, social, email, web, OOH, and in-park materials.
  • Oversee creation of in-park collateral (signage, menus, wayfinding, event materials) and ensure alignment with brand standards.
  • Partner with marketing to bring seasonal, promotional, and always-on campaigns to life.

Template & System Creation

  • Build and maintain scalable design templates and toolkits for digital and print assets utilizing AI tools.
  • Establish clear design guidelines that enable efficient execution by designers and external partners.
  • Ensure templates balance brand consistency with flexibility across multiple parks and markets.

Team Leadership & Workflow Management

  • Manage and mentor one direct report (Designer), providing clear direction, feedback, and development support.
  • Own incoming creative requests, prioritizing, assigning, and ensuring timely completion.
  • Determine when to personally lead work vs. delegate to the designer based on complexity and priority.
  • Maintain visibility into all active projects and proactively manage timelines and deliverables.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with the internal creative team, Waterpark and FEC marketing teams, and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with media, operations, and external partners to ensure creative aligns with channel strategy and execution.
  • Participate in campaign planning to ensure creative is integrated from concept through launch.

Production & Execution Oversight

  • Oversee production across digital, print, and out-of-home (OOH) channels.
  • Ensure all deliverables meet technical specifications and production standards.
  • Work with vendors and partners (print, fabrication, media) to bring creative to life in-market.

What You'll Bring

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating brand development, campaign creative, and multi-channel execution.
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and modern design tools.
  • Deep understanding of typography, layout, color, and visual systems.
  • Experience creating scalable design systems and templates.
  • Ability to think strategically while executing at a high level.
  • Highly organized with strong project management instincts.
  • Comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proactive, solution-oriented, and able to take full ownership of projects.
  • Strong communicator with the ability to present and defend creative decisions.
  • Collaborative mindset with a focus on elevating team output.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 6–8+ years of experience in design, with at least 2+ years in a senior or lead role.
  • Experience across digital, print, and environmental/experiential design.
  • Experience managing or mentoring junior designers.
  • Experience scaling design using AI tools.
