Job Description Raleigh Water - Water Distribution division is looking for a Utilities Technician to join our team. Utilities Technicians are devoted to completing preventive maintenance, utility repairs, utility locating, participating in investigations within our water system and providing excellent customer service. The Utilities Technician also performs maintenance and equipment operation for the City's distribution system by performing skilled activities in support of maintaining, replacing, and repairing water assets, such as services, mains, and fire hydrants, etc.

Work Hours: 6:30 am - 3:00 pm This position includes rotating after-hours on-call responsibilities. When on call, you'll receive standby pay for 8 hours at your regular hourly rate. If you're called out to work during your on-call shift, you'll be compensated at the overtime rate as per our company policy.

We understand that flexibility is key. Our on-call schedules as well as after-hours work requirements can vary based on seasonal needs and operational requirements. Therefore, the ability to work a flexible schedule is essential for this role.

Performs water valve preventive maintenance Identifies valves needing repairs Assists other investigative, hydrant, and repair programs as needed Assists with annual flushing program to ensure water quality standards Works after hours on an on-call rotating repair call crew Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance supporting City department(s) or maintenance function; selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks; performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations Collects, prepares, and enters system data; creates work orders; logs work activities; update maps; enters account data; compiles and prepares reports; maintains records, files, and work-related documentation Operates valve maintenance equipment including valve trucks, hydraulic valve turners, ERV's, handheld equipment, fabrication Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned Typical Qualifications Education and Experience: High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and 1 to 3 years' experience in water/wastewater infrastructure inspection, maintenance/repair, or related work OR Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be transferable such as: Landscaping: installer, maintenance, irrigation Construction: grading, storm drain, site work, builder, plumber, any utility construction (including fiber installation), road construction Mechanic: heavy equipment, HVAC, hydraulic systems Farming: manual labor, equipment operating Moving Company: labor, truck driver General Municipal Worker: utility inspector Tech School Student: mechanical Firefighter: full or part-time Licenses and Certifications: Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire Additional Information Knowledge of: Municipal water systems Collections system design and functionality Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work Basic mathematical concepts Basic record-keeping principles Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices Uses and properties of supplies and equipment Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations (based on assignment) Customer service principles Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment Traffic control and work zone safety Modern office practices and procedures including the use of standard office equipment and computer applications such as word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications Skill in: Heavy equipment and specialized tools and equipment operation Safe driving and navigating City streets with large vehicles Interacting with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, and others to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction Following directions and meeting standards Ability to: Properly setup work zones and safely work in City roadways Perform routine inspections to ensure safe operating conditions Monitor and maintain required supplies, materials, and inventory Comprehend reference books and manuals Utilize a computer and relevant software applications ADA and Other Requirements: Work Environment and Physical Effort: Heavy: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of forcefrequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, street environment (near moving traffic), construction site, or in a vehicle

Employees may occasionally work in a warehouse environment or shop environment. Work Exposures: There is frequent exposure to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and loud noises (85+ decibels average over 8-hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction). Employees may occasionally be exposed to individuals who are hostile or irate and communicable diseases.
