Job description

Camp by the Bay offers a special experience for campers through boating trips in beautiful Biscayne Bay. The Boating Crew plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, supervision, and overall positive experience of campers during all boating excursions. This position is ideal for responsible high school or college students who are experienced and confident in the water, attentive to detail, and committed to maintaining the highest safety standards.

Position Description and Responsibilities

  • Camp by the Bay runs from June 15 to July 24, with a mandatory staff orientation from June 10 to June 12. There will be no camp on June 19 and July 3. Primary daily work hours are 8:15 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with the possibility of additional after-camp work opportunities until 4:30 p.m. (based on enrollment and staffing needs). Applicants who are not available for the full camp period are still encouraged to apply; however, preference will be given to applicants who are able to work the entire session.
  • Ride aboard boats during all scheduled camp boating trips.
  • Ensure campers follow all boating and water safety rules at all times.
  • Actively monitor campers for safety while onboard and during water activities.
  • Assist boat drivers with operational needs as directed.
  • Help campers properly fit and secure life jackets and water shoes prior to departure.
  • Communicate any camper needs, concerns, or safety issues promptly to counselors and boat drivers.
  • Supervise campers in the water when boats stop at designated beaches or shallow areas.
  • Maintain calm, clear communication and strong situational awareness in dynamic waterfront environments.
  • Model positive, professional behavior and reinforce camp expectations emergencies.

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong swimming ability and comfort in open-water environments.
  • Prior experience with open-water boating, paddle sports, or sailing preferred but not required. 
  • Prior lifeguarding, or camp experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to remain attentive and focused for extended periods.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to follow directions.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
