SummaryThe Town of Nags Head is looking for a team player to join our water crew! This position will provide work in installation and repair of water meters, lines and appurtenances, and skilled work operating and maintaining the municipal water plant and distribution system related systems and equipment.
This position requires shift work including evenings, weekends and holidays. Responsibilities- Makes continuous daily visits to water treatment facilities checking and documenting readings and calibrations; collecting and testing water samples for quality; adjusts chemical feed rates of plant equipment and checks functioning of meters and pumps
- Performs daily chlorine, PH, hardness, chlorides, and iron analysis on water and record results.
- Calculates chemical dosage from readings and adjusts ensure optimum plant performance and records results in log book
- Enters daily readings into computer
- Gathers water samples to determine water quality
- Performs preventive maintenance and repair to sites as needed
- Repairs and maintains equipment such as pumps, motors, etc.
- Assists with related construction, installation or other related work within distribution system
- Reads water meters as needed or required; makes connects and disconnects of water services
- Responds to complaints as needed or assigned and reports all complaints to supervisor
- Maintains plant inventory, operating, and maintenance records
- Adheres to and complies with OSHA and other safety standards
- Performs free and total chlorine field analysis
- Completes work order forms and other work records
- Exercises and maintains water system valves
- Repairs line leaks; makes water taps, installs and removes water meters
- Changes water meters; repairs meter leaks; performs water pressure tests
- Installs, maintains, repairs and replaces fire hydrants
- Locates water lines and main service lines for contractors and other utility companies
- Performs landscaping and surface restoration at job site; patches asphalt
- Runs errands, picks up supplies and materials
- Performs other utilities and general services work as assigned
- Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment; pumps, motors, and lawn equipment
- Operates trucks, tractors, back-hoe, tapping machines and other equipment in connection with water system maintenance
- Performs general custodial and grounds maintenance work; mows grass, sprays weeds and cut bushes and brush
- May be required to work outside normal work hours in an emergency or on-call basis.
- Performs related tasks as required
Requirements- Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and necessary safety precautions
- Knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a water treatment plant and treatment
- Knowledge of SCADA system operations
- Knowledge of water quality issues and have ability to discuss issues related to color, taste and odor
- Ability to conduct routine water quality tests, accurately read meters and charts, and form conclusions and make operating decisions based on results
- Working knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of common automotive and mechanical equipment
- Ability to detect problems in the operation of mechanical equipment, perform preventive maintenance on equipment, and report problems to the supervisor
- Ability to read utility line maps and understand operational and service manuals
- Ability to receive and implement instructions provided by supervisor
- General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of potable water lines;
- Understanding of Backflow and Cross Connection

- Ability to perform manual and semiskilled labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions;

Physical Requirements
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment such as loaders and dump trucks in a safe manner to fit pipes and other parts, read gauges, and make written records.
Desirable Education and Experience
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and experience in construction-related utility work including heavy equipment operation experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with pump and motor mechanical maintenance and repair
Special Requirements
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License
- Ability to obtain NC Certified Operators Certificate for "C" Well Water Treatment
- Ability to obtain certification for total and fecal coliform analysis by NCWOA
- Ability to obtain Flagger certification
- Ability to obtain Water Distribution "C" License
- Ability to obtain Cross Connection and Backflow certification training
