What is a water modeling job?

A Water Modeling job involves using computer simulations and analytical techniques to study water systems such as rivers, lakes, groundwater, and stormwater drainage. Professionals in this field develop models to predict water flow, quality, and availability, helping to inform decision-making for water management, environmental protection, and infrastructure development. They often work with engineers, hydrologists, and policymakers to address challenges like flood control, drought planning, and pollution mitigation.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a water modeling professional?

As a Water Modeling professional, your daily responsibilities often include developing and calibrating hydrologic and hydraulic models, analyzing simulation results, preparing technical reports, and presenting findings to project teams or clients. You may collaborate closely with engineers, environmental scientists, and urban planners to ensure model outputs support design and decision-making processes for projects such as floodplain mapping, stormwater management, or infrastructure planning. Routine tasks also involve data collection, quality assurance, and staying current with the latest modeling techniques and regulatory requirements. This role offers a dynamic mix of independent analysis and teamwork, providing valuable experience on diverse water resource projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the water modeling position, and why are they important?

To excel in Water Modeling, you need a strong background in civil or environmental engineering, hydrology, or a related field, along with analytical and quantitative skills. Proficiency with modeling software such as HEC-RAS, SWMM, MIKE, or ArcGIS and familiarity with relevant certifications or regulatory standards is highly valued. Excellent problem-solving abilities, clear communication, and collaboration skills set top professionals apart. These competencies are vital for accurately simulating water systems, interpreting complex data, and effectively delivering actionable insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What does a water modeling do?

A water modeler develops and analyzes computer simulations of water systems, such as rivers, lakes, or urban water networks, to predict flow, pressure, and water quality. They use specialized software and data to support infrastructure design, flood risk assessment, and environmental management.

Job description

Job Title: Hydraulic Modeler – Water Resources

Job Description

This role focuses on hydrologic and hydraulic modeling to support stormwater, drainage, floodplain, and watershed analyses for infrastructure, transportation, and water resources projects. You will develop and run models using leading industry tools, analyze system performance under various scenarios, and prepare technical documentation that supports design decisions and regulatory submissions. The position offers a hybrid work arrangement within a large, well-established organization in the water resources space, with strong long‑term benefits once you transition to permanent status.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic modeling to support stormwater, drainage, floodplain, and watershed analyses.
  • Develop, calibrate, and run models using tools such as HEC‑HMS, HEC‑RAS (1D/2D), SWMM, or InfoWorks ICM to evaluate system behavior.
  • Analyze rainfall–runoff relationships, hydraulic capacity, flood impacts, and overall system performance under a variety of design and regulatory scenarios.
  • Prepare clear and accurate technical calculations, figures, exhibits, and written reports to support engineering design packages and regulatory submissions.
  • Support planning, design, and permitting efforts for infrastructure, transportation, and water resources projects by providing modeling insights and recommendations.
  • Coordinate closely with engineers, planners, and multidisciplinary project teams to integrate modeling results into practical and constructible designs.
  • Assist with coordination and communication with local, state, and federal agencies, including responding to technical comments and information requests.
  • Maintain organized model files, input data, and documentation in accordance with project requirements and QA/QC standards.
  • Use AutoCAD Civil 3D and related civil design tools to support drainage, paving, grading, and stormwater design as needed.
  • Apply knowledge of water regulations and standards to ensure modeling and design work aligns with applicable guidelines and permitting requirements.

Essential Skills

  • 4+ years of experience performing hydrologic and hydraulic modeling for drainage, stormwater, floodplain, or watershed studies.
  • BS degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related science discipline.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard modeling tools such as HEC‑HMS, HEC‑RAS (1D/2D), SWMM, InfoWorks ICM, or similar software.
  • Strong ability to analyze rainfall/runoff, flood impacts, and hydraulic capacity and translate findings into actionable technical calculations and reports.
  • Experience supporting stormwater, drainage, and water resources design through modeling and analysis.
  • Working knowledge of local, state, and federal water regulations relevant to stormwater, drainage, and floodplain management.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, planners, and agency stakeholders and to communicate technical information clearly.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D for civil design, including drainage, paving, and grading.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Solid understanding of hydrology, hydraulics, and civil design principles as they apply to water resources projects.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with InfoWorks ICM or similar advanced hydraulic modeling platforms.
  • Experience using ArcGIS or similar GIS tools to support watershed and floodplain analyses.
  • Engineering Intern (EIT) certification or similar professional credential.
  • Interest in building a long-term career within a large, well-known organization in the water resources sector.

Work Environment

This position is based in a hybrid work environment. You will work within a large organization of more than 20,000 people that is well recognized in the water resources space, offering exposure to complex infrastructure and transportation projects and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. The role involves extensive use of modeling software such as HEC‑HMS, HEC‑RAS, SWMM, InfoWorks ICM, and design tools like AutoCAD Civil 3D, along with GIS platforms such as ArcGIS.
