What does a wastewater lab technician do?

A Wastewater Lab Technician is responsible for collecting and analyzing water samples from wastewater treatment plants to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. They perform chemical, biological, and physical tests to monitor water quality, identify contaminants, and report their findings. The role is vital for protecting public health and the environment by ensuring that treated water meets safety standards before being released or reused.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wastewater lab technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Wastewater Lab Technician, you need a solid understanding of chemistry, biology, and environmental science, typically supported by an associate degree in a related field. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, analytical instruments (such as spectrophotometers), and data management systems is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure accurate testing and reporting, which are crucial for maintaining regulatory compliance and protecting public health.
