Job description

Summary To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. Summary of Position: The purpose of this position is to perform regularly scheduled manual collections of trash, yard waste, bulky items, deceased animals, and other special waste from residential properties and small businesses, and to dispose of the waste appropriately

Essential Functions What you can expect to be doing (Essential Functions): Rides with a refuse truck to collect waste; pushes carts to the refuse truck, empties cart into truck, and returns carts to curb; collects trash from residents that are unable to place waste to the curb; collects trash from cans and bins; ensures work areas are left in a clean and tidy condition; operates compaction unit of truck, assists with unloading the truck at the landfill or transfer station; assists the driver in backing truck by giving directions; manually collects bulky waste, yard waste and brush; removes litter from rights-of-way and deceased animals from roadways. Assists with maintenance of rear loading vehicles; ensures truck parking areas are kept clean; assists vehicle operator with pre and post trip inspections of the vehicle; and cleans vehicles. Assists with special projects, festivals and storms; maintains festival grounds at special events; and collects debris after natural disasters and loads debris into collection vehicles.

Ensures all proper tools are in working order; and maintains a clean and organized vehicle. Makes collection decisions. Speaks with customers regarding complaints and or questions and notifies driver and supervisor when collection issues arise.

Completes all other duties as assigned. Do you supervise or not. This position has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.

What are the physical demands. The work is typically performed outdoors in all weather conditions while walking, lifting, standing, stooping, climbing steps, balancing on steps, and intermittently sitting. The employee uses equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and strength.

The employee frequently lifts heavy objects, occasionally lifts very heavy objects over 50 pounds. Where and how do you work. The work is typically performed in a vehicle and outdoors in all weather conditions where the employee is exposed to traffic hazards, noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and foul odors.

The work requires the use of protective devices such as gloves, safety shoes, safety glasses, and reflective safety clothing. Minimum Qualifications What do you need to know to do this job effectively. Knowledge of: Department and safety rules, regulations, and procedures.

Geographic layout of town, including street names and routes. Refuse collection procedures. Ability to: Follow written and oral instructions.

Understand and follow all safety rules and procedures. Use web-based software systems. Use Microsoft Office tools relevant to the position.

Solve problems and make sound decisions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and customers. Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
