Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Public Works (DPW) Organic Waste Crew works the daily operations of the Organic Waste collection station at the Staff Commissary in Black Rock City and contributes to set up, maintenance, and strike. Crew members are responsible for following plans for organics, landfill, recycling, and materials management, including the safe and effective use of equipment such as the pressure washer. Additionally, they play an important role in supporting the infrastructure of BRC by staffing the Organic Waste collection station at the Staff Commissary and servicing the Staff Commissary vendor. This role requires a strong commitment to teamwork, adherence to safety practices, and a proactive approach to learning and applying best practices under the guidance.ย 

ย This temporary, ineligible for benefits role is:ย 

  • From August - September: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, based in Black Rock City, Nevada.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Operations (90%)

  • Review current SOPs, plans; Assist with the survey, build, and strike of the Organic Waste collection stations and Commissary remote recycling collection point.
  • Work daily operations at the Organic Waste collection station, washing stationย  and material collection from the Commissary collection station.
  • Support DPW Transfer Station Management in sorting and removing recycling and burnable waste streams from the Commissary.
  • Ensure a clean and safe work environment; enforce best practices and the use of OSHA-approved personal protective equipment (PPE) among the crew; train crew members on safety precautions for all relevant equipment.
  • Support the proper use, maintenance, and cleanliness of Fleet Vehicles, work sites, and resources utilized by the Organic Waste Crew throughout the event.
  • Work closely with the Organic Waste Management to execute and refine Leave No Trace (LNT) plans, including line sweeps of the Organics Collection Stations and the Commissary compound.
  • Participate in effective communication: attend necessary meetings, handle correspondence, and communicate any operational or personal issues promptly to management.
  • Uphold respectful behavior within the live/work areas.

Other Functions and Responsibilities (10%)

  • Help implement and support changing safety protocols as directed.
  • Read, understand, and act in accordance with Burning Manโ€™s staff policies, protocols, and behavioral standards.
  • Provide end-of-season feedback via the designated form or the EMBER process, highlighting successes and challenges to enhance future efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Monitor personal well-being by setting realistic boundaries and managing self-care while proactively addressing any concerns with management.
  • Perform various other duties as directed.


LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Teaching โ€“ Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and training of staff. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community.
  • Documentation - Assists in the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to their assigned duties.
  • Knowledge sharing โ€“ Helps acculturate and educate junior staff in Burning Man culture and business processes.
  • Learning โ€“ Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Knowledge of Burning Man values, ethos, and 10 Principles; especially Leaving No Trace.ย ย

  • Ability to temporarily relocate for work at the Burning Man event held in Gerlach, Nevada

Preferred

  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously worked for Burning Manโ€™s TSA Team and/or is familiar with its operations, or has at minimum been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and a good driving record.
  • OSHA 10 Certification.
  • Basic carpentry skills.

COMPENSATION:ย 

Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated rate for this position:

  • From August - September is $ 15.00 to $16.50ย  per hour.ย 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Off-playa:ย  Work is primarily sedentary in nature; no special demands are required.
  • On-playa:ย  This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
