What is a warehouse repack?

Warehouse Repack jobs involve inspecting, sorting, and repackaging products within a warehouse or distribution center. Workers in these roles ensure that items are packed according to company standards, often replacing damaged packaging, grouping products into new containers, or preparing items for shipment. The job may also include labeling, palletizing, and recording inventory. These positions require attention to detail, the ability to work efficiently, and sometimes physical stamina for lifting or standing for extended periods. Warehouse repack workers play a crucial role in maintaining product quality and meeting customer requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a warehouse repack?

To thrive as a Warehouse Repack worker, you need attention to detail, basic math skills, and physical stamina, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), barcode scanners, and packaging equipment is typically required. Reliability, teamwork, and time management are valuable soft skills that help maintain workflow and accuracy. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring efficient, error-free repackaging and timely order fulfillment in a warehouse setting.

What are some common challenges faced in a warehouse repack role, and how can they be managed effectively?

Warehouse Repack associates often encounter challenges such as managing repetitive tasks, maintaining accuracy while working quickly, and adapting to fluctuating workloads based on inventory demands. To manage these effectively, it's important to stay organized, follow established safety and quality procedures, and communicate regularly with team members and supervisors. Many warehouses offer cross-training and support systems to help employees handle busy periods and develop new skills, contributing to a positive and productive work environment.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The overriding goal of this position is to support the CEO’s goals in safety, culture, communication, production, and profit.

The Maintenance Mechanic II ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a large warehouse/repack facility by performing skilled maintenance and repair work across multiple trades, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical. This position inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs facility and production equipment (with on-site training provided for repack machinery), reads and interprets schematics and technical documents, and uses appropriate hand tools and PPE while following all safety, food safety, and company standards. The role requires a skilled, coachable mechanic with a strong multi-trade background in large warehouse/repack environments, the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, a solid understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions, and the ability to step into a team leader role when situations require. English fluency is required; bilingual fluency in Spanish is highly desirable to support effective communication with a diverse workforce.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Equipment Maintenance & Repair

  • Perform maintenance and repair on machinery and mechanical equipment, including, but not limited to, conveyors, motors, pumps, compressors, fans, valves, refrigeration units, auxiliary diesel generators, and related equipment.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment; determine root cause and implement safe, effective corrective actions.
  • Learn and perform maintenance and repair on repack machines and related production equipment through on-the-job training and vendor/technical resources.

Multi-Trade Tasks (HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical)

  • Perform routine HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical tasks within skill level (e.g., filter and belt changes, basic control checks, minor leak repairs, simple electrical component replacement, and troubleshooting).
  • Apply basic knowledge of all four trade categories while remaining open and coachable to additional training and upskilling as needed.
  • Read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, blueprints, and manuals to plan and execute work safely and efficiently.

Safety, Food Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies, lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, and PPE requirements; understand and apply basic occupational hazards and safety precautions (e.g., eye protection while grinding, proper lifting, guarding).
  • Support facility food safety and sanitation programs by maintaining clean, organized work areas and properly handling tools, parts, and materials in production and cold storage spaces.
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions, near misses, and equipment issues to Maintenance leadership and participate in corrective actions.

Documentation, Systems & Communication

  • Accurately complete work orders, preventive maintenance (PM) records, parts usage logs, and other documentation in the systems used by the company (e.g., CMMS, shared documents).
  • Communicate clearly with the Facility & Maintenance Manager, supervisors, and operations teams regarding work status, equipment condition, and potential impact on production or safety.
  • utilize computerized controls and diagnostic tools as required to support maintenance, troubleshooting, and system monitoring.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Provide informal guidance and support to other mechanics and workers; act as a team leader during projects, breakdowns, or special assignments when directed.
  • Collaborate closely with warehouse, production, quality, and other departments to prioritize work, minimize downtime, and support production and shipping schedules.
  • Model company Core Values in daily work, contributing to a positive, respectful, and problem-solving culture in Maintenance and across the facility.

GOALS & KPI’s

  • Safety – Maintain a record of 0 recordable safety incidents and achieve 100% compliance with PPE, lockout/tagout, and maintenance safety procedures while consistently identifying and addressing unsafe conditions.
  • Communication – Provide clear, timely updates on work orders, equipment condition, and downtime risks to Maintenance leadership and operations so that no avoidable disruptions occur due to lack of information from maintenance.
  • Culture – Demonstrate the company’s Core Values by working respectfully with others, supporting training and mentoring of less experienced team members, and reinforcing a strong safety and food-safety culture in the facility.
  • Production – Complete preventive maintenance and corrective repairs on schedule and with high quality so that key equipment meets targeted uptime and production lines achieve 100% of planned throughput without maintenance related delays.
  • Profit – Use parts, labor, and contractor resources efficiently, reducing repeat breakdowns and unplanned downtime, and contributing to year-over-year improvement in maintenance cost per case handled.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or GED, or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of maintenance experience in a large warehouse, repack, manufacturing, food/produce, or similar industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with mechanical systems and basic working knowledge in HVAC, plumbing, and electrical trades.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals, and to understand and follow oral and written instructions in English.

Preferred Experience

  • 4 or more years of related maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination of education and maintenance/repack experience.
  • Experience in fresh produce, cold storage, or food processing facilities.
  • Prior experience acting as a lead or informal team leader on maintenance tasks or projects.
