Position Summary...The Senior Counsel to provide strategic legal guidance on HIPAA, state health privacy laws, and emerging health data regulations within Walmart's Health & Wellness organization. The right candidate combines deep healthcare privacy expertise with strong operational judgment and the ability to enable innovation in highly regulated environments. The person in this role serves as a trusted advisor to the business, shaping privacy strategy across health-related platforms and services.

The Senior Counsel will join Walmart’s Health & Wellness legal team, providing expert guidance on HIPAA, state health privacy laws, and evolving health data regulations. This team supports innovation within a highly regulated environment by delivering strategic legal advice and risk mitigation. Collaborating closely with business partners Law Department colleagues, the team shapes privacy strategies across health platforms and services. The team fosters a culture of integrity, continuous learning, and operational excellence to support Walmart’s mission in health-related initiatives.What you'll do...
  • Provide expert guidance on HIPAA, state health privacy laws, and emerging regulations.
  • Lead health data privacy risk identification and mitigation, developing compliance programs and frameworks with cross-functional partners.
  • Advise on AI and health data issues, including data provenance, algorithmic decision-making involving PHI, and AI governance.
  • Support breach response and regulatory reporting.
  • Draft and negotiate health data and services contracts.
  • Develop privacy policies, playbooks, and training materials.
  • Partner with compliance, product, and technology teams on emerging health privacy and AI legislation.
  • Foster strong partnerships with business leaders to align legal strategies with corporate goals.
  • Mentor junior attorneys.

What you'll bring...
  • Deep knowledge of federal and state health privacy laws. 
  • Extensive experience providing legal advice and developing risk mitigation strategies.
  • Familiarity with AI applications in healthcare, including data provenance, training, and privacy protections.
  • Experience advising on compliance programs and data protection strategies.
  • Strong contract drafting, review, and negotiation skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal stakeholders.
  • Strategic, business-oriented thinker with bias toward timely, decisive action and ability to balance legal risk with business objectives.
  • Comfort operating in fast-moving, ambiguous environments with multiple competing priorities.
  • Proven collaborator across product, engineering, and business teams.
  • Experience leading cross-functional initiatives.
  • In-house experience strongly preferred.

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
