A W9 form is an IRS document used in the United States that collects a person’s or business’s taxpayer identification number and certification. It is typically filled out by freelancers, independent contractors, or vendors who are providing services to a company or individual but are not employees. The information on the W9 form is used by the payer to prepare 1099 forms at the end of the year, which report how much was paid to the contractor. Employees do not fill out W9s; instead, they use a W-4 form.
