Vulnerability Researcher Remote information

What are some common challenges faced by remote vulnerability researchers and how can they be addressed?

Remote vulnerability researchers often encounter challenges such as staying current with rapidly evolving threat landscapes, maintaining effective communication with distributed teams, and accessing secure lab environments for testing. To address these, it's important to regularly engage in professional development, participate in virtual security communities, and utilize secure cloud-based lab solutions. Additionally, setting clear communication protocols and using collaboration tools can help ensure smooth teamwork and project progress.

What is the difference between Vulnerability Researcher Remote vs Penetration Tester Remote?

AspectVulnerability Researcher RemotePenetration Tester Remote
CredentialsCertifications like OSCP, CEH, CISSP often preferredSimilar certifications, with emphasis on offensive security skills
Work EnvironmentResearch-focused, analyzing vulnerabilities in software and systemsSimulating attacks to identify security weaknesses
Industry UsageUsed in cybersecurity firms, tech companies, and research labsCommon in consulting firms, security service providers, and internal security teams
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding roles in vulnerability discovery and researchComparing offensive security roles and testing approaches

Vulnerability Researcher Remote and Penetration Tester Remote both focus on cybersecurity but differ in approach. Researchers analyze and discover vulnerabilities, while testers simulate attacks to evaluate security. Both roles require similar certifications and are employed in related industries, but their daily tasks and objectives vary.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Vulnerability Researcher (Remote), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Vulnerability Researcher (Remote), you need strong expertise in cybersecurity fundamentals, reverse engineering, and exploit development, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related certifications such as OSCP or CEH. Familiarity with technical tools like IDA Pro, Ghidra, fuzzers, debuggers, and scripting languages (e.g., Python) is essential for analyzing vulnerabilities. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are key soft skills that help in documenting findings and collaborating with distributed teams. These skills ensure the accurate identification and mitigation of security risks, which is crucial for protecting organizations against cyber threats.

What does a Vulnerability Researcher do, especially in a remote role?

A Vulnerability Researcher is responsible for identifying, analyzing, and reporting security weaknesses in software, hardware, or network systems. Working remotely, they use specialized tools and techniques to discover vulnerabilities, assess potential impacts, and sometimes develop proof-of-concept exploits. Their findings help organizations improve security by patching vulnerabilities before they can be exploited by malicious actors. Effective communication and collaboration with security teams are also important aspects of the role, even when working from afar.

Innovation Starts With You

Propel your career at Belden, where innovation creates possibilities-for our people, our customers, and the communities we serve. We connect people, information, and ideas to solve the world's most complex connectivity challenges, turning curiosity into meaningful impact. Here, you'll take on work that challenges you, supports your growth, and empowers you to shape what's next. You'll collaborate with global teams, gain diverse perspectives, and contribute to solutions that extend beyond our business-creating value in the world around us.

Together, we are shaping the future of digitization and paving the way for the next generation of innovation.

Security Solutions Architect (SSA) role within Belden's Innovation organization is a technical expert and a resource for our teams as they produce security solutions for various markets, applications, and use cases. The Architect works to assess, design, develop, build, and validate solutions by leveraging in-depth knowledge about Belden's portfolio and partner products/solutions while focusing on enhancements to Belden's security portfolio. The SSA is expected to lead efforts in developing use cases and documenting best practices and be a subject matter expert (SME) on multi-disciplinary teams (focused on cyber) while collaborating with the Security Solutions Manager to ensure partners are carefully introduced to our organization. Innovation and sharing technology insights both internally and externally is part of their daily tasks as well as collaboration with SMEs in the Belden Solutions team, Belden Platform team and Belden's R&D team.

Key Accountabilities
  • Design security architectures for key use cases surrounding OT security while maximizing the use of Belden products and services (e.g., network segmentation, secure remote access, secure industrial networking, asset visibility/monitoring, hardening, zero trust, threats and anomaly detection, network access control, etc.)
  • Produce reference architectures, validated designs, bill-of-materials, and configuration standards aligned to customer requirements and Belden products/services capabilities.
  • Defined integration patterns across networking, security, and management platforms with focus on OT security related to focused industry segments (e.g., identity, logging, SIEM, monitoring, certificate/management, network segmentation and cloaking, intrusion detection systems, network access control, etc.)
  • Build and maintain lab environments to validate solution performance, resilience, and security controls based on the concepts the group will define as key use cases to explore for OT security solutions.
  • Create implementation guides, configuration templates, and best-practice documentation to ensure repeatability and consistency across all Belden served regions and industries.
  • Support solution certification/assurance activities as needed (e.g., IEC 62443, NERC CIP, etc.)
  • Partner with sales and technical teams to scope requirements, design solutions, and support PoCs for strategic opportunities.
  • Lead technical workshops and architecture reviews with customers, partners, and internal stakeholders.
  • Capture deployment feedback and translate it into product/solution improvement recommendations.
  • Provide technical input to Product Management roadmaps (feature gaps, integration needs, interoperability requirements).
  • Collaborate with R&D on defect triage, performance tuning, and new capability validation, including the work to make partner solutions sellable under Belden's part numbers (aka. productization).
  • Coordinate with Services/Support to ensure deliverability, support readiness, and clear escalation paths as necessary to sustain the Security Solutions portfolio's lifecycle.
  • Develop enablement material and deliver training for sales engineers, partners and customers.
  • Promote secure architecture principles (least privilege, defense-in-depth, segmentation, logging/monitoring, patching) and align designs to applicable security standards and frameworks.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, cybersecurity, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years in security architecture, network architecture, solutions engineering, or security consulting.
  • Strong networking fundamentals (switching/routing, VLANs, ACLs, NAT, VPNs, firewalls) and security fundamentals (identity, certificates, logging, vulnerability management).
  • Experience in creating technical design documentation and leading technical discussions with customers.
  • Ability to work across teams and influence outcomes without direct authority.
  • OT/ICS security experience (industrial networks, Purdue model, segmentation strategies, remote access patterns for plants, SIEM, etc.)
  • Familiarity with IEC 62443, NIST SP 800, and common compliance/customer audit expectations.
  • Experience with SIEM integrations (Syslog, Splunk, Sentinel, QRadar), NAC/identity, IDS use cases (Dragos, Claroty, Nozomi Networks, etc.) and zero trust concepts.
  • Certifications (nice to have): CISSP, GICSP, CCNP/CCIE, IEC 62443, or similar.
Essentials
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required to perform the duties of the role (30% frequency of travel)
  • Computer literacy (MS Office, Visio, SharePoint) plus proficiency with platforms for CRM (e.g. Salesforce), ticket management (e.g. Jira) and knowledge sharing (e.g. Confluence)
