Job description

Job DescriptionOverview

The Vice President, EC6 Product Development provides executive leadership to maintain the EC6 design in a state of commercial and proposal readiness, supporting competitive deployments through targeted refinements, bid compliance, and marketdriven updates. This role is accountable for refining the existing EC6 product across the full preexecution lifecycle, including design optimization, engineering definition, cost and schedule baselining, constructability planning, supply chain and procurement strategies, and overall delivery readiness, up to, but not including project execution. A core focus of the role is ensuring that the EC6 design is technically robust, licensable, competitive, and executionready, with clearly defined cost, schedule, and risk profiles suitable for competitive bids.

The purpose of the Vice President, EC6 Product Development position is to provide visionary leadership and strategic oversight for Candu Energy's EC6 product development program, ensuring the CANDU EC6 design is refined, and well positioned to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global nuclear landscape. This role is accountable for advancing the existing EC6 product definition to a state of deployment readiness that supports informed customer decisionmaking and future project execution.

CANDU EC6 (Enhanced CANDU 6) is one of the latest evolution of Canada's proven CANDU reactor technology. It is a ~700 MWe class, Generation III+ heavywater nuclear reactor designed to deliver reliable baseload electricity with enhanced safety, constructability, and operating performance. The EC6 product is separate from the Candu MONARK under current development but has a key emerging strategic fit for many possible clients.

Key characteristics:

  • Heavywater moderated and cooled, pressuretube reactor.
  • Uses natural uranium fuel, with flexibility to use recycled fuels (e.g., RU, MOX, thorium).
  • Onpower refuelling, enabling high capacity factors.
  • Enhanced passive safety features, meeting modern international regulatory expectations.
  • Based on operating CANDU 6 fleet, with design improvements rather than firstofakind risk.

The design emphasizes deployability, grid suitability for midsized systems, and local supplychain participation, which has historically been a strong value proposition for new nuclear countries.

Design maturity:

The EC6 is a fully defined reference plant, derived from operating CANDU 6 units (e.g., Qinshan Phase III in China) and updated to Generation III+ standards. It is not an SMR, but a fullscale reactor optimized for countries seeking proven largeplant technology without the scale of >1,000 MW units.

Operating fleet context:

  • Decades of operating experience from CANDU 6 reactors worldwide.
  • Extensive lifeextension (Refurbishment) programs in Canada and abroad, reinforcing confidence in the underlying technology.

The Vice President is responsible for building and nurturing a highperformance, multidisciplinary team with deep technical expertise, while fostering a culture of rigor, innovation, and market responsiveness. The role will develop and implement a forwardlooking product strategy that aligns EC6 design evolution, cost and schedule baselines, constructability considerations, and supply chain readiness with Candu Energy's broader business objectives, including achieving "shovelready" EC6 configurations and supporting global new build opportunities.

Leading the EC6 product development team and working in close collaboration with the EC6 capture execution team, the Vice President will play a critical role in supporting and advancing new build opportunities across multiple domestic and international markets. By aligning product development priorities with market needs and customer requirements, this role will strengthen Candu Energy's ability to compete effectively, support bid and capture activities, and position the EC6 as a scalable, bankable solution for global deployment. Through disciplined leadership, innovation, and collaboration, the Vice President will help reinforce CANDU's leadership in large new nuclear while enabling confident transition from product readiness to future project execution.

Your role
  • Project Planning & Scope Definition:
    • Develop comprehensive project plans outlining timelines, budgets, resource allocation, and execution strategies.
    • Define project scope and deliverables in accordance with the market and client requirements.
    • Establish work breakdown structures (WBS), execution plans, and performance benchmarks.
  • Team Leadership & Coordination:
    • Assemble and lead a high-performing, multidisciplinary project team across engineering, architecture, construction, and support functions.
    • Foster collaboration and clear communication among all stakeholders to ensure project cohesion and success.
    • Work closely with the EVP, Nuclear Canada, and the technical steering committee to ensure alignment of the objectives.
    • Day-to-Day coordination with the Capture Managers and the Capture Execution team to incorporate the necessary market needs into the design.
  • People Management:
    • Maintain supervisory organizational structure and oversee career development of assigned project personnel.
    • Recruit, interview, and select staff with appropriate skills; coordinate with functional managers to implement training and development programs.
    • Make informed decisions on human resource matters, working closely with Labour Relations to resolve performance issues.
  • Contract & Risk Management:
    • Manage all aspects of budget and contract administration, including scope control, change management, and subcontractor/vendor oversight.
    • Conduct rigorous risk analysis using industry best practices such as Monte Carlo simulations and contingency draw-down curves.
    • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations and/or internal governance standards.
  • Safety & Quality Assurance:
    • Enforce adherence to safety protocols and quality standards across all project activities.
    • Develop and implement safety programs, training initiatives, and corrective action plans to uphold performance excellence.
    • Accountable for all aspects of nuclear and industrial safety, including compliance with corporate and client safety programs.
    • Lead development and enforcement of training, corrective action programs, and performance standards related to safety.
  • Performance Monitoring & Reporting:
    • Apply key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess project health and progress.
    • Establish robust reporting protocols to meet contract, corporate, and stakeholder oversight requirements.
  • Procurement & Supply Chain Management:
    • Work closely with the Capture execution team to contribute to the procurement strategies.
    • Oversee contract scope, change control, and flow-down requirements to subcontractors and suppliers.
    • Ensure governance and compliance throughout the supply chain.
  • Stakeholder Communication:
    • Serve as the primary liaison for internal and external stakeholders related to the product development program.
    • Maintain strong relationships with partners, suppliers, and support the capture team's engagements with the clients and the regulatory bodies to ensure alignment and transparency.
  • Ethical & Regulatory Compliance:
    • Ensure all project activities comply with corporate ethics, cybersecurity standards, import-export regulations, intellectual property protections, and security clearance protocols.
