What does a VP Defense Contractor do?

A VP Defense Contractor is a senior executive responsible for overseeing major aspects of a defense contracting company, such as business development, client relations, program delivery, and compliance with government regulations. They lead teams that secure and manage contracts with military or government agencies, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget. Additionally, they play a strategic role in shaping the company's growth, managing risk, and maintaining strong relationships with key clients and stakeholders in the defense sector.

How does the role of a VP Defense Contractor typically collaborate with government agencies and internal teams?

As a VP Defense Contractor, you will regularly liaise with government agencies to ensure compliance with regulations, clarify contract requirements, and report on project progress. Internally, you will lead cross-functional teams—including engineering, legal, and business development—to align project deliverables with contractual obligations and organizational goals. Effective communication and relationship management skills are essential, as you’ll often bridge the gap between client expectations and your company’s operational capabilities. This collaborative environment offers opportunities to shape strategic direction and foster innovation within your teams.

To thrive as a VP Defense Contractor, you need extensive experience in defense industry operations, program management, and a relevant degree, often accompanied by security clearance. Familiarity with defense acquisition systems, compliance frameworks (like ITAR and DFARS), and project management tools is typical, along with knowledge of government contracting processes. Strategic leadership, negotiation, and strong interpersonal skills set top performers apart in this high-stakes environment. These competencies ensure effective contract execution, regulatory compliance, and the ability to lead teams in delivering complex defense solutions.

Job Title: Vice President, Sales Strategy
Location: San Luis obispo, CA

Citizenship Requirement: U.S. Citizenship Required

An established, high-growth organization with over 35 years of success — operating at
the intersection of advanced commercial automation and national defense — is
conducting a confidential executive search for a Vice President of Sales Strategy &

Operations.

The company has recently surpassed $100M in revenue with aggressive plans to
double that figure within the next 1–2 years. Operating as both a commercial product
innovator and a DoD Prime Contractor (with additional capabilities in drone
counterintelligence), this privately held, family-owned business is poised for
transformative growth across multiple business units.

The Role:
The VP of Sales Strategy & Operations will serve as a key executive partner to the
CEO, with peer-level collaboration alongside the COO and CFO. This leader will be
responsible for revitalizing the sales organization to scale with the company’s ambitious
goals, aligning strategy, structure, and execution across both commercial
(Semiconductor/Industrial Automation) and defense segments.

Key Responsibilities:
· Architect and implement a scalable sales strategy aligned with growth objectives
across commercial and government sectors
· Redesign sales org structure, including team roles, responsibilities, metrics, and
compensation strategy
· Drive new business development while deepening relationships with strategic
partners and government clients
· Deliver actionable metrics and forecasting models that support data-driven
executive decision-making
· Mentor and lead a high-performing team of 6+ direct reports
· Support cross-division collaboration to balance client portfolios and product line
priorities
· Align sales approach to complex, highly engineered systems (motors, actuators,
power supplies, drone intelligence technologies, etc.)

Ideal Experience:
· Demonstrated success leading Sales Operations or GTM functions in high-
growth, multi-division environments
· Experience selling into complex technical markets — preferably with exposure to
Defense, DoD, or Government agencies
· Strong track record of organizational design, leadership development, and team
transformation
· Metric-driven mindset with strategic and operational agility
· Executive-level presence with hands-on ability to drive tactical outcomes
Travel: Light domestic travel; occasional international.
Location: Candidates must be able to work onsite most days in the Greater Santa
Barbara region. A hybrid arrangement may be considered.
