Job description

Operates a variety of computer systems, including z/OS Enterprise Server, Windows Server, and high-speed Xerox laser printers, while performing additional tasks required to maintain efficient data center operations. Maintains near-constant system monitoring using z/OS monitoring and job scheduling tools, as well as Windows Server monitoring solutions. Performs physical data center activities such as racking and unracking equipment and running cables beneath the data center floor between devices. Interacts primarily with Data Center Operations staff and their customers, with secondary engagement involving technical services, application support teams, and external equipment repair personnel. Works as part of a team of operators and a manager to support daily computer operations for Gerber Life Insurance Company across three shifts, seven days a week.
What you will do:
  • Monitors data center operations to ensure all scheduled jobs execute on time. Responds to console messages, alarms, and system alerts in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs). Performs initial troubleshooting and corrective actions to resolve system, job, and hardware issues, documenting and escalating as needed.
  • Reviews system logs and monitoring tools to identify trends, anomalies, and potential issues, taking proactive steps to prevent service disruptions and improve operational reliability.
  • Operates computer systems, printers, terminals, and other peripheral equipment. Prints and distributes output and performs physical data center tasks, including racking/unracking devices and running cables beneath the raised floor.
  • Monitors and manages backup processes across assigned locations, including handling backup media, performing manual backups and file restores, and ensuring successful completion in accordance with SOPs.
  • Responds to client inquiries regarding job status, output, and system availability, providing timely updates while maintaining accurate operational documentation, runbooks, and procedures.
  • Adheres to data security and access control policies and supports disaster recovery and business continuity processes. Contributes to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, reliability, and process adherence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

  • Associate's Degree In computer science or related field preferred - Preferred
  • 2-plus years experience as a data center Mainframe Computer Operator preferred. - Preferred
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills. - Required
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment. Must include knowledge of Excel and Word. - Required
  • Proven strong technical aptitude and ability to learn quickly and follow written direction. - Required
  • Proven attention to detail is essential. - Required
  • Proven ability to work independently. - Required
  • Proven ability to lift computer equipment, with assistance. - Required
  • Proven ability to lay on the floor and run cables under the floor. - Required
  • CA-7, JCL, Sysview would be helpful. - Preferred
Work Setting/Position Demands:
  • Works in an office setting and remains in a stationary position for long periods of time while working at a desk, on a computer or with other standard office equipment, or while in meetings.
  • Requires the ability to verbally communicate and exchange accurate information to customers and associates on a regular basis.
  • Requires visual acuity to read and interpret a variety of correspondence, procedures, reports and forms via paper and electronic documents, visual inspection involving small defects; small parts, and/or operation of machinery (including inspection); using measurement devices continuously. Visual acuity is required to determine accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.
  • Requires the ability to prepare written correspondence, reports and forms using prescribed formats and conforming to rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style on a regular basis.
  • Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Performs substantial movement of wrists, hands, and fingers for continuous computer work.
  • Extended hours required during peak workloads or special projects/events.
