Position Title
Science Laboratory Coordinator
Job Summary
Coordinate daily operations of college biology and chemistry laboratory facilities in support of undergraduate science education.
Supervisor Responsibilities:None, but may provide guidance to student workers.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Build positive, respectful relationships and collaborate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders in a civil and encouraging environment.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally in both verbal and written formats, tailored to diverse audiences and contexts.
  • Demonstrate thorough understanding of FERPA and other federal and state regulations related to admissions, registration, and student records. Ensures compliance in all student services operations.
  • Manage multiple tasks efficiently, prioritize responsibilities, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficient in software systems, such as Microsoft Office Suite and basic office equipment; comfortable learning new technologies as needed.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision and demonstrate a strong sense of initiative.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related field, or a combination of relevant experience, education and training that equates to the required degree.
  • Hazardous materials training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related field Experience with student advising, counseling and retention.
  • Two or more years of experience in laboratory management.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials up to 25 pounds with proper equipment; reasonable accommodations available.
  • Light physical activity required; must be able to work in an office setting, use standard office equipment, and communicate effectively in various formats.
  • Primarily daytime hours with some evening and weekends to support College events and initiatives.

  • [BIO/CHE] Maintain clean, orderly, safe laboratories and storeroom; provide appropriate receptacles in laboratories for waste materials, chemicals and broken glass. Organize and store laboratory equipment and supplies systematically and logically to facilitate usage by all faculty.
  • [BIO/CHE] Assemble, prepare equipment/supplies and organize/set out materials for all assigned labs; organize and maintain a laboratory experiment list for the semester (as supplied by individual faculty).
  • [BIO/CHE] Monitor completion of scheduled lab exercises by all sections; ensure that lab materials continue to be available for classes that unavoidably deviate from the standard lab schedule (e.g., due to class cancellation, holidays, etc.).
  • [BIO/CHE] Maintain current SDS database for laboratories, prep rooms, and storage areas; maintain usage logs and inventory of chemicals and supplies/equipment.
  • [BIO/CHE] Order all chemicals, supplies, and other consumables for laboratories.
  • [BIO/CHE] Serve as department Chemical Hygiene Officer. Treat chemical waste for appropriate disposal according to the college's chemical waste policies; autoclave and dispose of biological waste according to recommend biohazard waste disposal policies.
  • [BIO/CHE] Keep maintenance and test logs and perform/coordinate routine maintenance for lab equipment and send out equipment for routine maintenance and calibration.
  • [BIO/CHE] Act as an instructional/technical resource for adjunct faculty or students with respect to the lab experiment reagents/equipment and associated safety concerns.
  • [CHE] Prepare check-in and checkout documentation and equipment for the start and end of the semester. Conduct periodic inspection of student lab drawers.
  • [BIO] Clean and maintain field equipment (waders, nets, kits, etc.).
  • Maintain regular communication with Biology and Chemistry faculty to ensure effective collaboration and support.
  • Supervise open lab times for students to complete lab activities, as schedule permits
  • Assist faculty as available in developing experimental procedures or in constructions of specialty lab equipment.
  • Work with faculty to develop procedures for providing support and materials for students working on independent research projects.
  • Support academic laboratory safety program, train faculty as appropriate, and monitor compliance, including usage of safety goggles in the laboratory.
  • Participate in ongoing profession development in laboratory safety/chemical hygiene.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
