Job description

Position Title
Medical Assistant - Rural Float
Days - Full Time

Position Summary / Career Interest:
Responsible for promoting and restoring patient's health by collaborating with physicians and team members; and providing physical and psychological support to patients and their families. Performs a variety of patient care activities to assist laboratory, nursing and x-ray personnel. Exhibits the core values of Olathe Health System, Inc., compassion, integrity and unity.
Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
  • Schedule patients for testing procedures. Check appointment schedules and assists receptionists with physician's patients' schedules. Escorts patients to exam room. Assists patients in the patient flow through the lab, nursing, and/or x-ray department. Prepares exam rooms and instruments for examination and testing. Routinely monitors and maintains adequate supplies designated necessary to ensure appropriate functioning of designated work area. Oversees appointment bookings, ensures prioritization based on patient medical situation. Assists with timely flow of patients. Relies on clinical judgment when making appointments for patients in need.
  • Demonstrates skill in use of various types of equipment for examination and treatment procedures. Ensures the operation of equipment by completing preventative maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instruction, troubleshooting malfunctions, filling out maintenance request when needed. Rooms patients, measures and records vital signs, weights, allergies, current medications and any other information needed by the physician and other patient care duties as requested.
  • Instructs patients in collection of samples and test. Labels and maintains proper storage of specimens and tests. Delivers test(s) and obtains results. Ensures that lab reports, x-ray and other information are in patient's records. Arranges for age-specific patient testing and admissions. Post test and examination results. Assists patient and family regarding medications, treatments or other educational needs.
  • Maintains current working knowledge of managed care plan requirements to assist with managed care referrals pre-certification requirements or laboratory reference testing. Schedules appointments and/or assist with referrals as needed.
  • Utilized learned computer skills to view schedule, assign appointments, and search patient demographics. Demonstrates adherence to regulatory agency standards and recommendations. Information system proficiency. Understands and is competent in the use of OHSI and reference lab computer system(s). Able to accurately and efficiently enter, order and retrieve patient results and manipulate information.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and/or good laboratory practices to provide and evaluate patient care issues and clinical complaints. Knowledge of examinations, diagnostic and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of medications and their effects on patients. Knowledge of patient education principles to develop a self-care program. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Provides general nursing care to clinic patients. Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards. Prepares equipment, assists physician during treatment, examinations and testing of patients. Maintains exam rooms for necessary supplies and materials. Ensures cleanliness. Prepares list of medical supplies needed.
  • Performs duties of telephone advice nurse as needed. Deals with telephone messages in a prompt and efficient manner. Assess patient health through verbal communication. Triages patient telephone messages, documents per protocol and assures chart accompanies message. Bring telephone message of critical nature to the attention of the patient's physician, or the physician on call. Prioritize based on history gathered. Confers with the physicians and communicates next plan of care to patient as appropriate. Assists with prescription refills according to office protocol.
  • Observes records and reports patient's condition, any reaction to drugs and treatment. Responds to and refers incoming telephone calls. Maintains and review patient records, charts and other pertinent information. Documents calls triage form and/or patient's chart in a neat, orderly manner.
  • Participates fully as a member of the Patient Centered Medical Home Team.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
  • High School Graduate
  • 1 or more years of Medical Assistant experience OR
  • Graduated from a Medical Assistant program OR
  • Medical Assistant Certification (CCMA or NRCMA)

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Previous healthcare experience

Required Licensure and Certification
  • CPR/ AED/ BLS - Other BLS within 14 days
