Job Description Summary:
• Serve as coach for assigned crew and work productively with the other members of the coaching staff to ensure the success of the program.
• Work to maintain a safe and productive program environment for other staff, volunteers, and participants. Follow the team's safety plan.
• Provide help with boat and boat house maintenance.
• Prepare W&M rowers for success through land training as well as on the water workouts and assist in the management of regatta days throughout the year.
• Engage with rowers to support their learning to successfully manage rowing, academic work and other commitments.
• Introducing rowing concepts and equipment to new rowers.
• Teaching Novice rowers the basic stroke and improving technique.
• Assist with monitoring daily attendance.
• Coaching on water as well as on land workouts.
• Work with the Head Coach/Program Director to provide required progress stats on each athlete's performance and development.
• Exemplify the highest standard of leadership, sportsmanship and respect.
• Ability to work cooperatively with team members, coaching staff, executive board members, and W&M Recreational Center employees.
Job Description:
Required Qualifications:
  • Two years prior experience with rowing or coxing.
  • Ability to drive a launch and have Virginia DWR boating license.
  • US Rowing Level 1 Certification.
  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification, Red Cross & CDC Concussion Training.
  • US Rowing Safe Sport.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • US Rowing Level 2 or higher Certification.
  • Previous Coaching experience.

Conditions of Employment:
  • This is a non-exempt position, which may be eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed, on average, 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year.
  • This position is restricted based on the availability of funding.

Job Duties:
60 % - Coaching:
  • Serve as coach for assigned novice crew and work productively with the other members of the coaching staff to ensure the success of the program.
  • Work to maintain a safe and productive program environment for other staff, volunteers, and participants. Follow the team's safety plan.
  • Prepare W&M rowers for success through land training as well as on the water workouts and assist in the management of regatta days throughout the year.
  • Coaching on water as well as on land workouts.

15% - Offseason Workouts:
  • Coaching on land workouts during winter months.

10% - Introductory Techniques:
  • Introducing rowing concepts and equipment to new rowers.
  • Teaching Novice rowers the basic stroke and improving technique.

5% - Attendance:
  • Assist with monitoring daily attendance.

5% - Teamwork:
  • Ability to work cooperatively with team members, coaching staff, Executive board members, and W&M Recreational Center employees.

5% - Reporting:
  • Work with the Head Coach/Program Director to provide required progress stats on each athlete's performance and development.
  • Exemplify the highest standard of leadership, sportsmanship and respect.

Hiring Range: $23.00 to $27.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.
