What is a volunteer network engineer?

A Volunteer Network Engineer is an unpaid IT professional who helps organizations design, maintain, and troubleshoot their network infrastructure. They typically assist non-profits, community groups, or small businesses that need technical support but have limited resources. Responsibilities may include configuring routers, managing firewalls, improving network security, and ensuring reliable connectivity. This role provides valuable hands-on experience while making a positive impact. Volunteers may work remotely or on-site, depending on the organization's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer network engineer?

To thrive as a Volunteer Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of networking fundamentals, troubleshooting, and familiarity with common protocols and network hardware. Experience with tools such as Cisco IOS or Ubiquiti devices, and certifications like CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA, are often valuable. Volunteer Network Engineers in nonprofit environments often work with limited resources, legacy equipment, and minimal budgets, which can present unique troubleshooting and implementation challenges. You may need to creatively optimize existing infrastructure while ensuring network reliability and security. Collaboration is essential, as you'll often interact with staff who may have varying technical backgrounds, requiring clear and patient communication. This role also offers plenty of opportunities to develop your technical skills while making a meaningful impact for communities or causes you care about.

  • Support change, configuration, release, technology refresh, capacity planning, performance monitoring, vulnerability remediation, and disaster recovery activities.
  • Collaborate with enterprise architects, cloud engineers, security teams, identity teams, and operations personnel to integrate solutions and transition them into production support.
  • Brief Government and contractor stakeholders, mentor engineers, and lead technical reviews and problem-solving sessions.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, information systems, or a closely related technical field.
    • In lieu of a bachelor's degree, at least 15 years of IT network engineering experience is required.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in network engineering and design.

  • Minimum 10 years of experience working with DNS, wireless networking, routing, switching, network security, and enterprise network management or monitoring tools.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience engineering network connectivity for a hybrid/multi cloud environment.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience developing technical designs, test plans, implementation plans, diagrams, and change records.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience troubleshooting and resolving complex Tier 3 network issues.
  • Active Top Secret security clearance with ability to obtain SCI access

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with software-defined networking, SD-WAN, network automation, infrastructure as code, or configuration automation.
