JOB TITLE: Interpreter III, Mill City Museum


OPEN TO: This job is open only to current Mill City Museum staff.


LOCATION: Mill City Museum, 704 South 2nd St., Mpls, MN 55401

COMPENSATION: Typical starting rate $21.02 - $22.96 hourly.


STATUS & HOURS: Full-time, regular (approximately 2080 annual hours) position. Shift times typically are 8:45AM - 4:15PM on weekdays and 9:30AM - 5:15PM Saturday and Sunday with additional times for gallery rentals and Museum support (baking, studying for tours, etc.)


BENEFITS: Eligible to participate in State Employee Group Insurance Program and a retirement program with employer contribution. Generous vacation and sick time accruals with additional paid holidays.

DESCRIPTION: This position exists to conduct interpretive programs using a variety of interpretive techniques, to support admissions and the site store, assist in the daily operations of the site, and provide high quality customer service to visitors of Mill City Museum. The position also delivers higher level and specialized programs, serves as a mentor to new staff and volunteers, and serves as a floor lead to support daily operations of the museum gallery.


SUMMARY OF WORK: 1) Conduct interpretive programs and provide excellent customer service to engage and educate diverse audiences at Mill City Museum; 2) Deliver more in depth and comprehensive school and youth programs; 3) Facilitate and present specialized interpretive programs and conduct directed research for assigned programs, on and off site; 4) Serve as a mentor and trainer to new staff and volunteers, as assigned; 5) Serves as the Floor Lead to coordinate the daily operations of the gallery at Mill City Museum; 6) Provide occasional support to admission sales, museum store sales, and the operations of the store and ticket desk; 7) Receive, welcome and orient visitors to the museum; 8) Support museum operations by performing cleaning, maintenance, safety, security, and other tasks in support of ongoing operations.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated experience and ability to provide consistent, high quality customer service.

  • Experience in museum/classroom teaching, historic/museum interpretation, educational theater performance or storytelling.

  • Proven skill in delivering programs as an Interpreter II at Mill City Museum.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and maturely.

  • Demonstrated success in conveying program content and facilitating dialogue with diverse audiences.

  • Strong oral communication skills, and ability to listen and be responsive to questions and comments.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and contribute positively in a team environment.

  • Experience in or willingness to learn computer software programs as needed.

  • Experience working with diverse audiences of varying cultural backgrounds, ages, and abilities.

  • Ability to respond to questions and make adjustments to programs to meet audience needs.

  • Ability to kneel, crouch, reach, bend, push and pull to perform interpretive and operational duties.

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and walk up to 2 miles a day in heat, cold, rain, and snow.

  • Flexibility to work a varied schedule of weekdays, weekends, and evening hours which may vary in number.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Experience working with children and/or adults in an educational environment.

  • Experience in teaching, museum interpretation, theater, storytelling or group leadership.

  • Knowledge of museum education or teaching practices.

  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse audiences with varying cultural backgrounds, ages, and abilities.

  • Cash handling or retail experience

  • Experience with ticketing and/or point of sale software

  • Experience in or willingness to learn and work a variety of assignments, including but not limited to interpretive techniques, site orientation for guests, and retail and admissions software.

  • Strong organization and personal computer skills

  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse audiences with varying cultural backgrounds, ages, and abilities.

  • Familiarity with Minnesota and U.S. history.

  • Foreign language skills.
