What does a volunteer frontend developer do?

A Volunteer Frontend Developer creates and maintains the parts of websites and web applications that users interact with directly, such as layouts, navigation menus, and interactive features. They typically use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and may work with frameworks such as React or Vue.js. As volunteers, they often contribute their skills to non-profit organizations or community projects, helping to improve digital accessibility and user experience without compensation. Their work can include designing user interfaces, fixing bugs, and collaborating with other team members to deliver functional, visually appealing web solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer frontend developer?

To thrive as a Volunteer Frontend Developer, you need proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, along with a solid understanding of responsive design and web accessibility principles. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Vue.js, version control systems such as Git, and experience using collaborative tools like GitHub are typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and a collaborative mindset make a significant difference in contributing effectively to team projects. These skills and qualities are essential for building user-friendly web interfaces, ensuring seamless teamwork, and delivering valuable solutions to organizations or causes.

What types of projects and technologies can I expect to work with as a volunteer frontend developer?

Job description

The Role

We are looking for an experienced Frontend Engineer to join a focused team with responsibility for a key client-facing product within Netcraft's portfolio.

As a Frontend Engineer, you will assume several critical responsibilities:

  • Build efficient and reusable front-end abstractions, while maintaining a comprehensive component library.
  • Collaborate closely with our talented Product Design team to bring the next generation of Netcraft's products to life. You'll take Figma designs and transform them into functional and visually stunning interfaces.
  • Take a lead role in advancing the consistency and unity of our product user interfaces.
  • Maintain high engineering standards with a thorough understanding of code quality, a test-driven approach, and a well-maintained CI/CD delivery flow.

The team also manages a backend written in Go. A working knowledge of Go is not a requirement to apply for this role. However, we are looking for candidates with an open mindset, willingness to learn, and the ability to take the initiative and step up to new challenges in a small group context.

Our Tech Stack
  • Frontend: Next.js, React, Tailwind, TypeScript
  • Design: Figma, Storybook, Radix
  • Backend: TypeScript, tRPC, Go, OpenAPI
  • Infrastructure: Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS
  • Data & Messaging: MariaDB, RabbitMQ

To Be Successful, You'll Need
  • Substantial commercial experience delivering and hardening production frontend systems.
  • Strong skills in React, frontend and server-side TypeScript, Tailwind, CSS, HTML, and common related libraries/tools.
  • A solid understanding of core web and browser concepts, including privacy and security web design practices.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across Engineering, Product, and Design.
  • A positive, solution-oriented mindset, the ability to take ownership of your work, and the desire to push yourself and learn new things.

Bonus Points If You Have
  • A history of successfully creating and delivering frontend projects from the ground up.
  • Experience working with or supporting front-end design systems, especially component libraries such as Storybook.
  • Experience with Go, backend-for-frontend solutions, and server-side technologies.

The Rewards Package
  • 33 days of vacation, including national holidays (which can be worked if you prefer)
  • Generous enhanced family leave and pay
  • Enhanced company sick pay from day one of employment, with additional support after your first six months' service
  • Equity Tracking Units, allowing you to share in Netcraft's long-term success (eligibility criteria apply)
  • Hybrid and flexible working options
  • 401(k) Safe Harbor Plan with employer match
  • Comprehensive private health cover, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Meals, snacks, and drinks provided in the office
  • Two paid Learning & Development days per year, plus access to learning resources such as Udemy and Coursera
  • Two paid Volunteering Days per year to support causes that matter to you
  • Spot reward bonus scheme recognizing outstanding contributions
  • Employee Referral Bonus Scheme
