Job Summary
Under general supervision, the Electrical Equipment Repairman 2nd Class assists in the testing and repairing of distribution transformers according to specifications.
Because the Authority has a responsibility to serve the public 24 hours a day, an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand and may be called in on short notice during power outages and other emergencies.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Tests and repairs distribution transformers, reclosers, circuit breakers and regulators.
  • Checks transformers and other apparatus prior to installation by line crew.
  • Handles, tests, dumps and stores suspected NON-PCB and PCB (Poly-chlorinated biphenols) oils (transformer oils) at cistern tank #55.
  • Works on underground high voltage cables; opens and closes fuse cutouts.
  • Tests distribution transformers on 7620 primary voltage, reclosers on 14,400 primary voltage, circuit breakers and regulators in the transformer shop.
  • Repairs distribution transformers and reclosers.
  • Repairs street lights in enclosed spaces.
  • Tests and repairs hot line sticks from 7620 volts and up for di-electric strength; also coats all sticks for hot line work.
  • Conducts transformer turn ratio (TTR) tests on transformers.
  • Tests capacitors and transformers by megering; runs separator at the Plant when dumping transformer oil and water.
  • Takes monthly inventory of transformers in stock and monthly recloser readings for troubleshooting purposes.
  • Cleans and maintains cistern tank #55 from oil and water.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of transformers at all times; maintains an inventory of retired transformers at cistern tank #55.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of distribution electricity.
  • Working knowledge of the electro-mechanical devices.
  • Knowledge of simple electric circuits.
  • Ability to use test equipment such as oil testers, recloser testers, hot stick and glove testers.
  • Ability to use instruments such as volt/amp meter and phase rotation tester.
  • Ability to read electrical and mechanical diagrams.

Education & Experience
High school diploma, or equivalent, including courses in the electrical trades and two (2) years of responsible experience in electrical work. Must be certified to perform hot line work.
