What is a volunteer electrical engineer?

Volunteer Electrical Engineers are professionals or students in electrical engineering who offer their skills and expertise without pay to support non-profit organizations, community projects, or humanitarian initiatives. Their work often includes designing, installing, or maintaining electrical systems, providing technical advice, and assisting with renewable energy or infrastructure projects. Volunteering in this capacity can help communities access reliable power, improve safety, and promote sustainable development. It also offers the engineer valuable experience, networking opportunities, and personal fulfillment.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a volunteer electrical engineer?

To thrive as a Volunteer Electrical Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and troubleshooting, typically with a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with tools like AutoCAD, MATLAB, or PCB design software, as well as safety certifications, are often required. Strong teamwork, adaptability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with diverse teams and stakeholders in nonprofit or community projects. These skills ensure the successful completion of technical projects while supporting organizational missions and community needs.

How does a volunteer electrical engineer typically collaborate with other team members and project stakeholders?

As a Volunteer Electrical Engineer, you will often work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including project managers, construction volunteers, and local community members. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to discuss project progress, sharing technical expertise, and ensuring electrical designs align with overall project goals and local requirements. Clear communication and adaptability are essential, as you may need to explain complex concepts to non-engineers and adjust plans based on available resources. This collaborative environment not only helps projects succeed but also offers valuable networking and learning opportunities.

What is the difference between Volunteer Electrical Engineer vs Electrical Technician?

AspectVolunteer Electrical EngineerElectrical Technician

Job description

Pettibone seeks an Electrical Engineer to join their Engineering team in Baraga, Michigan.

If you like designing systems that actually move, lift, haul, and work hard in the real world, this is a great role. You’ll support rugged, mobile, heavy equipment used in industries like forestry, rail, recycling and scrap handling, construction, biomass, and oil and gas. In other words: this is not theoretical engineering. This is hands‑on, practical, “make the machine work better” engineering.

WHAT WE OFFER
  • Competitive salary aligned with your experience and qualifications.
  • Medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage (employee and family plans available).
  • Health Savings Account and Flex Spending Account.
  • Company paid short‑term and long‑term disability insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with up to 4% company match.
  • Employee Assistance Program.
  • Paid time off (vacation, sick, holidays, and volunteer time—just to name a few).
  • Full‑time position with schedule flexibility (M-F 8am‑4:30pm, or a flexible 4‑day/10‑hour schedule).
  • Great onboarding and training program.
  • A safe, team‑oriented, fun work environment.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
  • Design and maintain electrical and control system designs across product lines.
  • Develop electrical systems for off‑road vehicles and mobile equipment.
  • Lead electrical & control system projects while managing cost, timelines, and coordination across teams.
  • Select components, build system models, generate BOMs, complete risk assessments, and troubleshoot issues.
  • Analyze drawings, specs, documentation, models, and test results to make sure designs meet engineering standards and vehicle performance needs.
  • Lead design reviews to ensure systems are practical, reliable, manufacturable, and built to spec.
  • Develop performance specifications, test plans, procedures, and calibration methods.
  • Support prototype builds, field testing, and validation of electrical and control system performance.
  • Help internal teams, dealers, and end users in resolving electrical and control system issues.
  • Drive continuous improvement and help shape the electrical/control system strategy for future products.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology required.
  • 3 or more years of Electrical Engineering experience required.
  • Experience with electrical and control system design, development, and troubleshooting required.
  • Experience with mobile equipment, forestry, or mining equipment preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office, SolidWorks, Parker IQAN, and Zuken E3 Wireworks preferred.
  • Our electrical systems are 12 VDC and 480 VAC; experience with 12 Volt DC is a plus.
  • Ability to travel occasionally, including overnight travel, as needed.
