Job description

Description
MaineHealth Corporate
Professional - Nonclinical
Req #: 84926
#LI-REMOTE
Are you a design and data visualization professional who understands how people process information and can help transform complex healthcare data into clear, intuitive, and meaningful visual experiences ?
The Senior Data Visualization Designer is MaineHealth's expert in human-centered data visualization and design . This role helps ensure that dashboards, reports, and other analytical products are designed around how users think, work, and make decisions. The designer establishes visualization and dashboard design standards, develops reusable design patterns and guidelines, and helps analytics teams consistently apply those principles across data products.
This role is not primarily responsible for developing dashboards or performing data analysis. Instead, it brings expertise in visual design, graphic design, information design, human-centered design, and data storytelling to the analytics organization . The designer works closely with analysts and analytics leaders to translate user needs and design principles into practical standards, templates, patterns, and approaches that can be implemented by analytics teams. You'll partner with analytic teams to determine the most effective ways to communicate complex concepts visually. You'll help define what makes a dashboard intuitive, accessible, consistent, and effective, and you'll guide the design of high-profile dashboards and data products while coaching analysts and analytics teams on how to apply established visualization standards.
We're looking for someone who combines a strong understanding of human behavior, visual communication, graphic design, information design, and user-centered design with an appreciation for how data is used to support decision-making . You should be able to look at a dashboard or visualization and determine whether the information is organized, presented, and designed in a way that helps the intended audience quickly understand what matters and take action. Experience working with analytics or business intelligence teams and familiarity with tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Lightdash, or similar platforms is valuable, but hands-on development of dashboards is not the primary focus of this role. We are particularly interested in candidates with backgrounds in data visualization, UX/UI, information design, graphic design, human-centered design, visual communication, or related disciplines who understand how to translate design principles into practical standards that can be adopted and implemented by analytics professionals.
The ideal candidate is someone who can see the experience from the user's perspective, establish what "good" looks like, and help a team of analysts consistently deliver it.
Summary:
The Senior Visualization Expert is the organization's authority on how data is visually communicated, ensuring analytical outputs are not just accurate but clearly understood and actionable. This role brings deep expertise in data visualization theory, design thinking, and healthcare analytics to shape how insights are presented and interpreted across clinical, operational, financial, and enterprise teams.
As a strategic partner, they establish and enforce visualization standards, lead the design of complex and high-visibility data products, and elevate the capabilities of the broader analytics team. They understand that visualization choices directly influence decision-making and stakeholder trust, and they proactively identify and correct designs that could mislead or distort understanding. By applying principles such as pre-attentive attributes, gestalt theory, and effective visual encoding, they translate complex data into intuitive, credible, and impactful narratives that drive informed action.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  1. Education: Master's degree or formal training in information design, data visualization, or a related field preferred. Bachelor's degree in data science, information design, computer science, health informatics, statistics, or a related field required or 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of education.
  2. Experience: More than 5 years of experience in a data visualization or business intelligence role, with demonstrated expertise in health system or similarly complex analytical environments required. Portfolio demonstrating advanced visualization work in a health system or enterprise analytical context preferred. Experience establishing visualization standards or design systems within an analytical team preferred.
