Job description

Location Designation: Hybrid - 3 days per week 

Role Overview:
The Data Governance Engineer plays a key role in advancing New York Life's data governance initiatives. This individual contributor role focuses on the operational design and execution of metadata cataloging, lineage harvesting, governance workflows and technical integrations using platforms such as Atlan, and Unity Catalog.
Working closely with data governance analysts, product managers, and technology teams, the data governance engineer enhances data discoverability, quality, and compliance across the enterprise; supporting New York Life's Data Strategy and enabling timely, data-driven decisions built on trusted information.
What You'll Do:
Configure, test, and maintain Atlan platform functionality, including building custom connectors and platform operations.
Design, develop & maintain custom integrations / bespoke solutions for data governance & cataloging requirements.
Validate and maintain lineage for key data assets across dbt, Databricks, and BI tools.
Perform metadata tagging, glossary association, and stewardship workflow setup in Atlan.
Curate and maintain glossaries, taxonomies, and metadata for business and technical assets.
Design and implement governance workflows (e.g., stewardship approvals, certifications, data access protocols).
Support PII/PHI classification, data quality checks, metadata enrichment and lineage validation.
Collaborate with data product managers, SMEs, and engineers to capture business context, align it with technical architectures and strengthen metadata documentation.
Drive adoption of governance tools through road-shows, training sessions, user enablement, and data owner/steward playbooks.
Participate in Agile ceremonies by contributing to backlog building and sprint events in Jira.
What You'll Bring:
5-7+ years of professional experience, including 2-3+ years in a data governance function.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
Strong understanding of data governance frameworks, metadata management, and data cataloging/lineage concepts.
Proven ability to translate business needs into governance policies, standards, and workflows.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills and experience working across business and technical teams.
Familiarity with SQL and data modeling concepts.
Excellent communication, documentation, and stakeholder management skills.

Pay Transparency

Salary Range: $100,000-$143,000 

Overtime eligible: Exempt 

Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes 

Sales bonus eligible: No 

Actual base salary will be determined based on several factors but not limited to individual's experience, skills, qualifications, and job location. Additionally, employees are eligible for an annual discretionary bonus. In addition to base salary, employees may also be eligible to participate in an incentive program.
