What is a volunteer construction worker?

Volunteer construction workers are individuals who offer their time and skills, often unpaid, to help build or repair homes, community buildings, or other infrastructure projects. They typically work with non-profit organizations, disaster relief groups, or community initiatives. Volunteers may assist with tasks such as framing, painting, roofing, and landscaping, depending on their skills and the project's needs. No prior experience is usually required, as basic training is often provided. This work not only supports communities in need but also allows volunteers to gain hands-on experience and make a positive impact.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer construction worker?

To thrive as a Volunteer Construction Worker, you need basic knowledge of construction practices, physical stamina, and often a willingness to learn rather than formal qualifications. Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, safety equipment, and sometimes OSHA safety certifications is beneficial. Strong teamwork, communication, and a positive attitude help volunteers collaborate effectively and adapt to changing tasks. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring safety, productivity, and a positive impact on construction projects that often serve communities in need.

What are some common challenges faced by volunteer construction workers, and how can they prepare for them?

Volunteer construction workers often encounter challenges such as adapting to varying skill levels within a team, working in unfamiliar environments, and managing physically demanding tasks. To prepare, it's helpful to review basic construction safety practices, communicate openly about your experience level, and remain flexible when plans or assignments change. Bringing a positive attitude and willingness to learn can make the experience rewarding, and most organizations provide on-site training and support to help volunteers succeed.

Job description

Join Amrize as a H&S Manager ( Construction) - Project NorthStar and help construct what's next. If you're ready to put your skills to work on projects that matter - and build a career with a company that's building North America - we want to hear from you!

ABOUT THE ROLE

The H&S Manager - Construction is fully committed to representing and supporting Amrize in all contractor meetings, critical decision-making, and stakeholder management. The primary responsibility is to develop, implement and drive the site safety program for the Saint Constant Plant Modernization NorthStar Project, in line with Amrize safety policy, the Quebec legislation, compliant with CNESST and Safety Code for the Construction industry and Safety Code for the Principal Contractor. This role acts as the principal point of health and safety coordination between the Amrize Project Team, plant management, contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, and regulatory authorities.

WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH

  • Promote a proactive safety culture targeting "zero harm," and meet all corporate OH&S objectives.
  • Develop, organize, and implement the site-specific OH&S program and emergency-response plans for the entire site workforce.
  • Maintain visible, seamless H&S oversight and adequate coverage during all active site construction activities.
  • Review and pre-qualify contractors and service providers, evaluating safety performance and job hazard assessment (JHA)/method statements.
  • Oversee and audit the project permit-to-work system covering PPE, LOTO, hot work, and critical lifts.
  • Lead or coordinate investigations for accidents, injuries, and near misses; identify root causes and ensure preventive actions are closed out.
  • Lead and chair the site OH&S Committee and establish/maintain a formal hazard and deficiency register.
  • Ensure full compliance with CNESST, the Safety Code for the Construction Industry, the Construction Site Prevention Program, and Principal Contractor obligations under Quebec legislation.
  • Coordinate H&S communications, inspections, and relations with CNESST, union representatives, and project stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to health, safety and environmental policies in all work environments and areas. Promote a culture of safety and exhibit these behaviors.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor's degree or Diploma in a technical field, supplemented by advanced training in OH&S or risk management.
  • Must be locally qualified/certified as an OH&S Manager Construction according to regional regulations.
  • Minimum of 5 years as an OH&S Coordinator/Manager on construction sites, specifically within major industrial or heavy-construction projects managing multiple contractors and simultaneous work fronts.
  • Mandatory, strong working knowledge of Quebec occupational health and safety legislation, the Safety Code for the Construction Industry, and CNESST requirements.
  • Proven experience navigating live, operating-plant environments (knowledge of cement plant operations is considered a strong asset).
  • Bilingualism in French and English, both written and spoken. Knowledge of English is required, as the incumbent must communicate regularly with clients and suppliers of goods and/or services along with team members or support functions outside Quebec.
  • Strong leadership, negotiation, stakeholder dialogue capabilities, quality/environmental awareness, and computer application proficiency (MS Office).

Additional Requirements:

  • Flexibility and capacity for mobility, balancing professional requirements with personal considerations.
  • Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Amrize approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests.

WHAT WE OFFER

  •  Flexible Health & Dental benefits coverage for you and your dependents, effective day one.
  • A generous Pension Plan designed to support you through various stages of your career and life.
  • Access to voluntary programs like RRSP and TFSA for future financial planning.
  • Healthy Living support through an Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP), offering confidential assistance for work, health, or life challenges.
  • Easy access to mental health and well-being support.
  • Service recognition awards to celebrate your contributions.
  • Perks & discounts on a variety of products and services.
  • Access to online learning platforms, financial educational assistance, and a culture that fosters career growth and opportunities.
  • Financial support for new parents beyond statutory benefits.
  • An inclusive and welcoming environment where everyone can be themselves.
  • A collaborative work culture in a supportive and team-oriented work environment
  • Company-provided personal protective equipment ensuring your safety and comfort on the job.
  • A flexible work schedule to help you balance professional and personal responsibilities.

Amrize is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
