Job description

About Central Texas Food Bank

The Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB) is the largest hunger-relief organization in Central Texas and a proud member of the Feeding America network. From its headquarters in Austin and its satellite facility in Waco, CTFB serves a 21-county region on a mission to increase food access by providing nutritious food, leading hunger and poverty advocacy efforts, and transforming lives through programs, education, and innovative solutions. Through a combination of direct service programs and a network of approximately 250 nonprofit community partners, CTFB supports over 612,000 food-insecure individuals annually. We have a community-focused culture that values Service, Integrity, Dignity, Collaboration, and Innovation.

Position Overview
The Communications Manager (CM) serves as the steward of CTFB's voice, messaging, and narrative, ensuring all communications reflect the organization's mission, strategic priorities, and brand. As the department's lead copywriter, editor, and editorial strategist, the CM identifies and develops stories that advance organizational goals, translates complex initiatives into compelling and accessible content, and ensures messaging is clear, consistent, and audience-focused across all communications. The CM supports media relations and public relations activities as necessary, and works collaboratively with Creative Services and Marketing to transform organizational priorities into engaging stories that strengthen the food bank's reputation, inspire action, and build trust throughout the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organizational Voice & Messaging: Serve as the steward of the Central Texas Food Bank's voice by developing and managing organizational messaging that is clear, consistent, audience-focused, and aligned with the organization's mission, strategic priorities, and brand standards. Ensure messaging is effectively adapted for diverse audiences, platforms, and communication needs.
  • Editorial Strategy & Content Leadership: Lead the organization's editorial strategy by identifying, developing, and prioritizing stories that advance organizational goals. Manage the integrated editorial calendar, coordinate content development across departments, and ensure communications are timely, relevant, and aligned with organizational priorities and campaigns.
  • Story Development, Copywriting & Editing: Develop compelling, mission-driven stories and written content that communicate organizational impact, strengthen stakeholder engagement, and support fundraising, advocacy, volunteer engagement, programs, and community awareness. Serve as the department's lead copywriter and editor, ensuring all content meets the highest standards for quality, clarity, accuracy, consistency, and AP style.
  • Executive & Media Communications: Support executive communications and media relations by developing speeches, talking points, press materials, media responses, and other strategic communications that strengthen the organization's reputation and public visibility. Coordinate media inquiries and cultivate relationships that increase awareness of the Food Bank's mission and impact.
  • Brand Stewardship: Serve as a steward of the Central Texas Food Bank brand by ensuring consistent application of messaging, tone, style, and communication standards across all written communications. Partner with Creative Services and Marketing to maintain an integrated and cohesive brand experience.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Creative Services, Marketing, and departments across the organization to translate strategic priorities into compelling stories and integrated communications that engage target audiences and advance organizational objectives.
  • Values Alignment: Model and reinforce CTFB's values of Service, Integrity, Dignity, Collaboration, and Innovation by consistently reflecting these principles in decisions, actions, and interactions with team members, volunteers, partners, and the community.
  • Other: Perform other duties as assigned.

Relationships

This position, reporting to the Director of Marketing + Communications, is a member of a five-person team. The Communications Manager actively builds relationships throughout the organization and community. This is a highly visible, hands-on role that requires regular engagement at distributions, events, partner locations, volunteer activities, and community gatherings.
