Job description

Summary

The Core Services squad owns the foundational platform that the rest of our engineering organization builds on top of: Lambda-based microservices, event-driven architecture over Kafka, and infrastructure managed entirely in code through Terraform and Spacelift. This is not a maintenance role. We are actively expanding the platform, and the engineers on this squad shape the patterns that every other squad follows.

We are looking for engineers who are serious about their craft and genuinely excited about what AI-assisted development can do for velocity and quality. Claude Code is part of our standard engineering workflow. We expect the people on this team to use it, push its limits, and help us get better at it as an organization.

Why Jewelers Mutual
Since 1913 we’ve been committed to supporting the Jewelry industry and putting customers at the center of everything we do. With over a century of trusted expertise, we’re financially strong, forward-thinking, and driven by curiosity. Guided by our core values of Agility, Accountability, and Relevancy, we lead through innovation.

As a technology focused organization, we embrace cutting-edge tools and data-driven insights to continuously improve our products, services, and customer experience. Our mission is to be the industry’s most trusted advisor by investing in our people, adopting new technologies, and striving for excellence.

What You'll Do

  • TypeScript Lambda microservices and API Gateway integrations across our AWS-native stack.
  • Event-driven workflows using Apache Kafka (via Redpanda Managed) for asynchronous, decoupled system communication.
  • Infrastructure as code with Terraform and Spacelift, owning deployments from first commit to production.
  • Resilient service patterns: retry logic, dead-letter queues, graceful degradation, idempotent handlers: that make the platform boring in the best way.
  • Agentic AI solutions using Claude Code and the Anthropic API, including automated workflows and intelligent processing pipelines.
  • Shared libraries, tooling, and internal standards that raise the quality floor for the entire engineering organization.

Tech Stack

  • Cloud: AWS: Lambda, API Gateway, Aurora Serverless (PostgreSQL), S3.
  • Messaging: Redpanda (Managed Kafka) as the primary event bus for streaming and async communication.
  • Language: TypeScript / Node.js throughout backend services.
  • Infrastructure: Terraform for resource definitions, Spacelift for pipeline orchestration and policy enforcement.
  • AI Tooling: Claude Code as a first-class development tool; Anthropic API for building intelligent, agentic features.

How We Work

The Core Services squad operates with a high degree of autonomy and a high bar for quality. A few things that define how we work:

  • Claude Code is in our standard workflow: we use it for code generation, refactoring, documentation, and exploring agentic automation patterns. You will be expected to develop fluency and push the boundaries of what it can do.
  • Infrastructure is owned by the engineers who write the code. No tickets to a platform team. You deploy your own services.
  • Code review is substantive, not ceremonial. We expect feedback to be direct and useful.
  • We measure impact, not activity. Story points are a planning tool, not a performance metric.

What You'll Bring

  • 2–4 years of software engineering experience, with meaningful exposure to backend services in a cloud environment.
  • Comfort with TypeScript or a strong willingness to go deep on it quickly: this is our primary language.
  • Familiarity with event-driven architecture and messaging systems; Kafka or similar experience is a plus.
  • Infrastructure fluency: you understand what your code runs on and can write or modify Terraform when needed.
  • Security-conscious by default: you think about auth, least-privilege access, and data sensitivity without being prompted.
  • AI-forward mindset: you use AI tooling in your development workflow and think actively about where agentic approaches can replace manual work.
  • Strong written and verbal communication: this squad works across team boundaries constantly.

What We Offer You

  • Community & Giving: Benefit from 50% charitable gift matching and paid volunteer time to support nonprofit causes.
  • Great Place to Work® Certified: Join a team recognized for an environment of innovation and growth.
  • Collaborative Culture: Work alongside talented, passionate peers who value ownership and continuous learning.
  • Competitive Compensation & Benefits: Includes performance bonuses, generous paid time off, and a top-tier retirement program with 401(k) matching and additional company contributions.
