Job Title
Summary:
The Chief Flight Instructor reports directly to the Interim Dean of Science, Mathematics, and Healthcare Sciences and is directly responsible for the following responsibilities below.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Development and general coordination of aviation programs, teach and assist in the development of courses in the aviation programs.
  • Maintain with all flight instructors flight-related courses such as private, instrument, commercial, and multi- engine, and CFI/CFII ground schools.
  • Responsible for the aviation record-keeping system that monitors progress of flight students in satisfying FAA and academic requirements.
  • Certifies training records, enrollment certificates, stage and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) check rides, conducts stage and/or final test given to students.
  • Conducts initial proficiency check of each instructor to be used in a course of instruction; conducts annual recurrent proficiency checks in accordance to FARs; supervises flight training activities, assistant chief instructor, and flight instructors; monitors flight instructor performance and makes recommendations; ensures compliance with FARs.
  • Assigns and maintains flight training schedule.
  • Prepares weekly aircraft lease reports and biweekly payroll reports for accounting.
  • Responsible to arrange and attend meetings as required of the Aviation Science Advisory Committee (local and national).
  • Act as liaison between the College and the FAA personnel and the aviation industry.
  • Oversees and monitors the flight simulators and technicians and performs routine maintenance on the hardware.
  • Recommends changes to the instructional programs and curricula as required.
  • Works with Assistant Flight Instructor and/or full-time aviation staff Instructor/Professor to maintain quality teaching of courses.
  • Maintains regular office hours, as approved by the dean or associate academic dean, for consultation with students.
  • Participates in academic audits upon request of the College.
  • Assists in preparation of budgets for submission to the dean or associate academic dean.
  • Maintains professional development and stays current in his/her field of study.
  • Keeps informed on procedures to be followed in case of emergencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution or Airline Transport Pilot certificate.
  • Current FAA Flight Instructor Airplane Single and Multi-Engine Land with Instrument Instructor Airplane.

Certifications
  • Act 153 Clearances (Act 34 PA Criminal Background, Act 151 PA Child Abuse History, Act 114 FBI Clearance Fingerprinting)

Work Experience
  • Must meet all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations for Chief Flight Instructor as prescribed under Part 141 of the FAA regulations.
  • Chief flight instructor airplane certification per 14 CFR, FAR 141 regulations.
  • Three years' flight instruction experience in part 141 environment.
  • Competency with FAR Part 25, A/C systems, engines and structures.
  • Experience as a captain or pilot-in-command of turbo jet or turbo fan aircraft with a Type rating.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Must possess a high level of the following work skills and behaviors: teamwork/cooperation, initiative, customer service, and commitment to continuous professional growth in skills and knowledge.

Preferred
  • Previous Part 141 Chief Flight Instructor experience.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
