Position Summary Information
General Description of Position
This posting is a general pool application to volunteer in the UPWARD department at the SCC Lincoln campus. This position is volunteer and unpaid.
Under the general direction and supervision of the UPWARD Prison Education Administrative Director, the Volunteer Lab Assistant is responsible for supporting students in building digital literacy in a supervised computer lab setting. Responsibilities include monitoring appropriate use of lab computers, providing general tutoring support, and connecting students with UPWARD resources. This is a part-time, temporary, unpaid position.
Essential Functions
  1. Provide academic and technical assistance in a group environment in various academic areas and at various academic levels.
  2. Provide student supervision when using UPWARD computer equipment.
  3. Maintain and turn in accurate documentation for student attendance, computer usage, and program needs.
  4. Assist with special events including working with community-based organizations on campus.
  5. Develop an in-depth knowledge of the College and attend and participate in training opportunities.
  6. Provide effective, positive communication to students.

Marginal Functions
  1. May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
  2. Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
  3. Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules (hours/days/work location) are scheduled by Southeast Community College based on the needs of the College. Work hours, shifts, days, and work locations may vary depending on the needs of Southeast Community College and are subject to modification. Emergency or scheduled special activities may require hours outside of the regular workweek.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  1. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and in person.
  3. Knowledge and ability to provide academic assistance in various academic areas and academic levels, as well as refer students with various academic and/or social needs.
  4. Ability to work independently with students and under the direction of project staff.
  5. Demonstrated proficiency in basic study skills and expertise in a specified course or area of study.
  6. Ability to use basic computer skills.
  7. Must be able to become a Nebraska Department of Correctional Services volunteer to gain access to SCC correctional facilities
  8. The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Desired Qualifications
  1. Previous experience with the UPWARD program or lived experience in a carceral environment.
