Working supervisor/team leader performs animal husbandry & biotechnical duties, and oversees the work of Animal Science Workers and Certified Animal Specialists. Cooperates, collaborates and communicates with internal and external constituencies. Performs other duties as assigned by LAR management, including veterinarian.Job Description:
Key Roles and Responsibilities
60% - Supervisory and Training Duties
  • Supervise daily operation of husbandry and housekeeping duties in the animal facility. Ensures animal husbandry responsibilities and animal handling techniques are adequately performed.
  • Conducts periodic meetings with husbandry team.
  • Meets with the manager weekly to go over all of personnel and operations concerns, issues and outcomes.
  • Inspects work areas, reviews check sheets and forms and records his/her findings.
  • Updates standard operating procedures (SOP's) as necessary.
  • Interprets established SOPs/internal policies and ensure compliance.
  • Coordinates supply delivery and distribution.
  • Ensures that disinfection schedules are timely followed.
  • Assists in training new LAR employees, and animal researchers.
  • Provides biotechnical assistance.
  • Evaluates work processes and analyses workload.
  • Makes recommendations on improvements.
  • Troubleshoots husbandry and equipment related problems.

30% - Husbandry
  • Conduct animal health observations. Complete animal care assignments according to standard operating procedures.
  • Feed and water animals. Receive and identify animals using appropriate methods.
  • Handle and restrain animals. Wean animals.
  • Monitor environmental parameters.
  • Record information on the cage cards and check sheets.
  • Complete forms and sends email notifications to investigators.
  • Submit cage orders.
  • Operate mechanical cleaning equipment.
  • Maintain supply inventory and requests replacements as necessary.
  • Disinfect animal rooms and support areas.
  • Organize and clean storage areas.
  • Follow established health and safety procedures.
  • Follow facility security and traffic flow procedures.
  • Continue to develop in education and skills by proactively seeking out training opportunities within KUMC or external organizations.

10% - Other
  • Maintains/ensures compliance with established federal, state and local regulations relating to laboratory animals and facilities.
  • Follows established health and safety procedures.
  • Follows facility security procedures. Performs related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Work Experience:
  • 4 Years of experience in biological sciences, agricultural sciences, or animal science and some animal experience. Education may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, agricultural sciences, or animal science. ALAT certification. CMAR certification.

Certification:
  • Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification

Compensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
