How much do voice recording jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 23, 2026, the average hourly pay for voice recording in Oregon is $50.93, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $41.44 and $63.56 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is voice recording?

Voice recording refers to the process of capturing spoken audio using various devices such as microphones, smartphones, or computers. This audio can be used for different purposes, including creating voiceovers for videos, audiobooks, podcasts, and virtual assistants. Voice recording jobs typically involve reading scripts clearly and accurately, often following specific guidelines for tone, pronunciation, and pacing. Professionals in this field may work in studios or remotely, depending on the project requirements.

What are voice recording jobs?

Acting and recording are the primary jobs in voice recording. During a voiceover, both positions work together to create their part of a production. As an actor or artist, your primary duties involve learning a script and bringing the character to life with your voice. As a recorder or editor, your responsibilities are to record the actor’s voice on an audio track and edit sound bites and outtakes. Both positions involve working in a recording studio, often creating voice overs for television shows and commercials. In some cases, you may also work for motion pictures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a voice recording specialist?

To thrive as a Voice Recording Specialist, you need excellent vocal control, clear diction, and the ability to interpret scripts, often supported by training in voice acting or audio production. Familiarity with digital audio workstations (DAWs), professional microphones, and audio editing software is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and adaptability make someone stand out in this position. These skills are essential to produce high-quality audio content that meets client specifications and engages audiences.

What are some common challenges faced by voice recording professionals in maintaining vocal health during long recording sessions?

Voice recording professionals often face the challenge of vocal fatigue and strain, especially during extended sessions or when working on demanding scripts. Maintaining proper hydration, practicing vocal warm-ups, and taking regular breaks are crucial for preserving vocal health. Additionally, understanding microphone technique and adjusting delivery based on the recording environment can help minimize the need for retakes, reducing overall strain. Employers may also provide guidance on best practices and encourage a supportive work environment to prioritize voice care.

What is the difference between Voice Recording vs Transcriptionist?

AspectVoice RecordingTranscriptionist
Required CredentialsBasic audio recording skills, sometimes audio editingTyping skills, listening skills, sometimes certification
Work EnvironmentRecording studios, remote setups, on-siteHome office, remote, or client sites
Industry UsageMedia, entertainment, corporate recordingsLegal, medical, business documentation

Voice Recording involves capturing audio content, focusing on the technical aspect of recording sound. Transcriptionists listen to audio recordings and convert them into written text. While both roles require good listening skills, transcriptionists need strong typing abilities and familiarity with transcription software. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in the audio industry.
