What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as a VLSI Design Intern?

As a VLSI Design Intern, you can expect to assist in the design, verification, and testing of integrated circuit (IC) components, often collaborating closely with experienced engineers. Typical tasks include coding in HDLs for logic implementation, running simulations, supporting layout and timing analysis, and participating in debugging sessions. You may also help prepare technical documentation and contribute to project reviews. This hands-on experience provides a valuable opportunity to apply your classroom knowledge to real-world chip design challenges and builds the foundation for future roles in semiconductor engineering.

What is a VLSI Design Intern job?

A VLSI Design Intern works on designing, testing, and verifying integrated circuits and semiconductor devices. Interns typically assist in RTL design, circuit simulation, and layout verification using industry-standard tools. They collaborate with engineers to optimize performance, power, and area constraints. This role provides hands-on experience with chip design methodologies and exposure to the full VLSI design flow.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Vlsi Design Intern position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VLSI Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of digital and analog circuit design principles, knowledge of semiconductor device physics, and familiarity with relevant coursework in electrical or electronics engineering. Experience with hardware description languages (HDLs) like Verilog or VHDL, as well as proficiency in Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools such as Cadence or Synopsys, is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns contribute effectively to project teams. These competencies enable interns to support complex chip design tasks and succeed in collaborative, fast-paced engineering environments.

Job description

Join a team shaping the performance of next-gen CPUs and AI/ML chips. As a Physical Design Intern, you'll work hands-on from synthesis through tapeout, collaborating with top engineers to optimize some of the most advanced silicon in the world.

This role is onsite, based out of Austin, TX or Santa Clara, CA.

Who You Are

  • Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in EE, ECE, CE, or CS
  • Solid understanding of logic design, VLSI, and transistor-level concepts
  • Familiar with PnR tools, timing analysis, and power optimization techniques
  • Comfortable scripting in Tcl, Perl, Shell, or Python

What We Need

  • Support key physical design tasks-synthesis, floorplanning, PnR, clocking, timing closure
  • Analyze and improve design PPA (Power, Performance, Area)
  • Collaborate with front-end, PD, and architecture teams to influence early design decisions
  • Explore and implement new flows, tools, or RTL experiments to optimize designs

What You Will Learn

  • End-to-end physical design flow-from RTL handoff to final tapeout
  • Deep dive into timing, power, EM/IR, and area trade-offs
  • Industry-standard tools and techniques for modern chip development
  • How top-tier silicon teams operate at scale

Compensation for all engineers at Tenstorrent ranges from $50/hr - 70/hr including base and variable compensation targets. Experience, skills, education, background and location all impact the actual offer made.

Tenstorrent offers a highly competitive compensation package and benefits, and we are an equal opportunity employer.
