Job description

SUMMARY
  • This Job Description provides a description of the duties for which the Welder II will be accountable and responsible. The intent of this Job Description is to enable the employee to be successful within the chain of command, by promoting transparent, effective, efficient, and quality corporate operations. Other duties may be assigned to the Welder II from time to time: these additional duties will be communicated directly from the Plant Manager.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
  • Vital Link Inc.'s core business is in the fabrication, maintenance, and installation of jet engine test facilities and sound suppression systems. This requires that the corporation support both field and plant operations, while operating both in a commercial and military environment on a worldwide basis. The Welder II in general shall be responsible for ensuring that all assemblies and parts are properly welded and delivered to the painting/shipping department for processing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensure that welding of assemblies is in accordance with the shop drawings, and that the work routers are properly signed and dated.
  • Ensure that all steps, inspections, and other instructions as shown on the work control sheets are followed and documented. Ensure that material and part identification is maintained.
  • Maintain welding equipment.
  • Control welding electrodes, gas, and other supplies as required.
  • Ensure all welds are properly cleaned after welding, and base metal is properly cleaned before welding.
  • Ensure that welding is done in accordance with Vital Link Inc. welding procedures, project specifications, and the standards of the American Welding Society (AWS).
  • Ensure that proper equipment, procedures, supplies, and materials are available and utilized in the execution of welding.
  • Set up basic weldments to facilitate fast quality welding.
  • Ensure that appropriate safety practices, equipment, and gear is used.
  • Ensure that all problems with equipment and machinery are promptly reported to the Maintenance Department for corrective action. Halt production on equipment and machinery if they cannot be safely operated.
  • Responsible to ensure that all welding machines, supplies, equipment, and gear, and the weld-out area in general, are kept in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.
  • Ensure activities are conducted in accordance with Vital Link International Standards Organization (ISO9000) policies.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to pass a standard AWS test in the horizontal (2G) for 3/8 and vertical (3G), for structural steel in the size of 1. This position requires the physical capability to perform welding work, moderate to heavy lifting. Position requires
    knowledge of steel and sheet metal fabrication and welding, specifically welding procedures and the operation of welding equipment. Also requires the ability to read the welding requirements of fabrication drawings and travelers. Ability to do minor fit-up to include meeting drawing requirements and dimensions.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • This position will perform other duties as required by management when welding duties are not available.

ISO9000 SPECIFIC DUTIES
  • Be familiar with and understand Vital Link Quality Policy and company objectives.
  • Understand required ISO9000 specific Procedures and Work Instructions.
  • Complete all records required by Procedures and Work Instructions.
  • Participate in Vital Link Continuous Improvement activities as appropriate.
  • Participate in ISO9000 training as required.
  • Cooperate with Auditors.
  • Report any deviations to appropriate area manager/supervisor.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or minimum 5 years experience is preferred. Though skill, technical knowledge, discipline, communication, and organizational ability will be the deciding factors for the skill level of welding assigned.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Welding certification is preferred but not required. Must meet VLI welding tests/requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, crouch, bend and occasionally lift and/or move up to (40) pounds.
  • Must have a full range of body movements including the use of hands to fingers, handle or feel objects, climbing, bending, reaching, lifting, and walking.
  • Must have command of sight, hearing, and touch. Must have the ability to coordinate and communicate effectively with other personnel.
  • Should be able to properly lift moderate and heavy steel parts, equipment, and supplies on a routine basis.
  • Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • This position will be working primarily outdoors and in an open shop in all types of weather. This position is exposed to heavy amounts of potentially hazardous dust and fumes requiring the use of safety glasses and protective clothing is required.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually high and may require hearing protection.
  • Usually eight (8) to ten (10) hour workdays, five (5) days per week with occasional Saturday and Sunday work, as well as additional early and/or late workdays to accommodate special business circumstances.
  • Extended work hours and/or travel may occasionally be required.
