Principle Virtualization Engineer - The Principal VMWare Data Center Virtualization Engineer is responsible for implementing, tuning and maintaining VMware-based solutions. A successful candidate will have knowledge of VMware 6.0 or higher using VMware vSphere and ESXi Virtual Infrastructure, as well as vCenter Server. The successful candidate will have solid technical skills and a great customer service attitude.

Location: College Park, Maryland (walking distance to metro).

Duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Responsible for implementing, tuning and maintaining VMware-based solutions;
  • Builds and maintains VMware ESX Servers, Administration of Virtualized Servers, VMware ESX, etc;
  • Develop project plans and status reports for senior management;
  • Assist Enterprise Operation Manager to participate in enterprise project deployment or resolve operational issues.
  • Establish system parameters and formats to ensure hardware/software compatibility;
  • Coordinate and/or modify project requirements in terms of existing and projected computer capacity and capabilities;
  • Implements VMware vSphere for server consolidation and virtualization;
  • Applies technical knowledge of networks, operating systems and utilities to the VMware environment;
  • Provides guidance to management for changes related to virtual infrastructure;
  • Maintains awareness of VMware software patches and their impact on the environment;
  • Develops and maintains operational guidelines for the maintenance and support of the virtual infrastructure;
  • Evaluates resource requirements for VMware products;
  • Uses Configuration Management tools such as Puppet manage large server farm.

Job Requirements include (but are not limited to):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience;
  • 10 or more years of relevant work experience, including working with host platform security, server consolidation, virtual desktops and server virtualization;
  • 5 years of experience in virtualization and consolidation of server technologies, specifically VMware vSphere and ESXi Virtual Infrastructure, as well as vCenter Server (vSphere 6, ESXi 5.5 and 6);
  • 5 years of experience building and maintaining high-availability VMware environments;
  • 5 years of experience in RedHat Linux 6 and 7
  • Hands-on expertise with debugging experiences in Red Hat LINUX system administration.
  • Shell scripting experience with PowerShell, bash, Perl and/or Python.
  • Strong working knowledge of SAN Storage Solutions, such as NAS appliances such as NetApp s and Dell NetApp, especially cluster mode;
  • VMware Certified Professional 6 or 6.5 – Data Center Virtualization (VCP6-DCV, VCP6.5-DCV) preferred, VMware Certified Advanced Professional 6 – Data Center Virtualization Design ( VCAP6-DCV Design) is a big plus;
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and analytical thinking;
  • Able to adapt to changing deadlines or revised assignments;
  • Ability to both take direction and work in a self-directed environment; to effectively interact with all levels of staff and external contacts; and ability to work, as an effective team member is essential.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
