The Role
Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.
This position is for a Structural Engineer 3 in the Propulsion Reactor Engineering Planning Yard (PREPY; Department E50) supporting the construction, maintenance, overhaul, and modernization of CVN78 Class aircraft carriers.
The Engineer candidate will perform dynamic structural (shock) analyses utilizing finite element analysis (FEA) methods with the pre-/post-processor FEMAP and ABAQUS computer applications, perform hand calculations using textbook methods, and develop engineering calculation reports, check structural analyses reports, train junior level engineers in the use of all engineering software, develop customer submittal letters, support the development of ship alterations (ShipAlts), and be able to work independently with minimal supervisor oversight. Interface with Construction Engineering and Trade's to mitigate fabrication and installation issues associated with CVN 78 Class propulsion plant structure and be able to develop close working relationships with all PREPY engineering and design disciplines as well as all upstream and downstream customers. Work with Design utilizing Team Center workflow process to communicate engineering resolution and approve changes to the product model. Tools utilized include Siemen's TEAMCENTER, FEAMAP, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, MATHCAD and a variety of other engineering and design software applications.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
  • Planning Yard Experience specifically working knowledge of responding to in-service ships LARs,
  • Leading and submitting to NAVSEA; ShipAlt proposals for new construction ships
  • Proficient in PRE/Post processing utilizing Femap/Nastran to perform shock analyses
