What is a virtual science teacher?

A Virtual Science Teacher is an educator who teaches science subjects to students through online platforms instead of a traditional classroom setting. They design and deliver lessons, assign and grade coursework, and provide support using digital tools such as video conferencing, interactive simulations, and virtual labs. Virtual Science Teachers must adapt their teaching methods to engage students remotely and ensure that learning objectives are met. This role often requires strong communication skills, technological proficiency, and the ability to create an interactive online learning environment.

What does a virtual science teacher do?

As a virtual science teacher, your responsibilities are to instruct students online in science. You may teach a specific subject, such as biology, geology, or chemistry, or you might focus on a general science curriculum, such as middle school science. Your duties include teaching students in a virtual environment, developing and administering different assessment strategies and tools (such as daily or weekly e-quizzes or assignments), and leading online class discussion. You also respond to student questions via email, chat, or video.

How does a virtual science teacher effectively engage students and foster participation in an online classroom setting?

Engaging students as a Virtual Science Teacher often involves using interactive tools such as virtual labs, simulations, and collaborative discussion boards to make lessons dynamic. Teachers typically employ a mix of live video sessions, breakout rooms for group activities, and digital quizzes to encourage participation and keep students motivated. Building relationships and maintaining regular communication through emails or virtual office hours is also key to supporting student learning and addressing challenges. Collaborating with other educators and technology support staff helps ensure lessons run smoothly and students receive a well-rounded online science education.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual science teacher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Science Teacher, you need a strong background in science education, subject-matter expertise, and a teaching certification or relevant degree. Familiarity with online learning platforms, digital assessment tools, and virtual classroom software is crucial. Excellent communication, adaptability, and the ability to engage students remotely are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities enable effective online instruction, foster student engagement, and ensure academic success in a virtual environment.

The Science Content Coach serves as a content-area resource to help teachers maintain a clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, what standards have been taught, what standards remain to be addressed, and where adjustments to pacing or instructional priorities may be necessary to support student achievement.

Please note – while this is an online school position and all instruction occurs virtually, travel and face to face attendance will be required several times per year to support in person state testing and student events.

ELIGIBILITY: Open to residents of Florida.

  • Monitor pacing throughout the school year to ensure required science standards and content are taught within established instructional timelines.

  • Support teachers in unpacking science standards and understanding the content knowledge, scientific practices, and levels of rigor students are expected to demonstrate.
  • Review curriculum maps, pacing guides, lesson plans, and instructional resources to ensure alignment with grade-level science standards.
  • Analyze student achievement and standards-mastery data to identify strengths, instructional gaps, and standards requiring additional attention.
  • Collaborate with teachers to adjust instructional pacing and priorities based on student performance and standards mastery.
  • Help teachers identify prerequisite concepts and skills that may need to be revisited to address learning gaps.
  • Support vertical alignment across grades 3–10 to ensure appropriate progression of scientific concepts, knowledge, and practices.
  • Assist teachers in balancing required content coverage with opportunities for review, intervention, inquiry, and application of scientific concepts.
  • Monitor student performance on classroom, benchmark, diagnostic, and state assessments to evaluate progress toward standards mastery.
  • Facilitate content-specific planning and data discussions focused on pacing, standards coverage, and student mastery.
  • Identify and recommend curriculum resources, investigations, simulations, and supplemental materials aligned to specific science standards and student needs.
  • Collaborate with Instructional Coaches, teachers, and school leadership to connect science content priorities with effective classroom instruction.
  • Maintain documentation related to pacing, standards coverage, student mastery, and identified instructional needs.
  • Remain current on state science standards, curriculum expectations, assessment requirements, and content-specific best practices.
About You
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Education preferred.
  • Five or more years of experience in education with demonstrated experience or expertise in science.
  • Strong knowledge of science standards, curriculum, pacing, and assessment across grades 3–10.
  • Strong understanding of science content progressions, prerequisite knowledge, and vertical alignment across grade levels.
  • Experience developing, implementing, or monitoring curriculum maps and pacing guides preferred.
  • Experience analyzing standards-level student achievement data and identifying instructional priorities.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers to identify content gaps and develop actionable plans for addressing them.
