Job Overview:
Responsible for providing continuous virtual visual and audible observation of assigned patients through approved technology, in alignment with the Registered Nurse (RN) care plan and as directed by the Xanitos Leadership team and hospital licensed clinical staff. The Virtual Patient Observation Assistant promptly communicates patient safety concerns and observed changes in behavior to assigned clinical staff by completing the following duties.
Daily Responsibilities:
  • Continuously monitors assigned patients visually and audibly through approved virtual observation technology, consistent with the observation level and care plan established by the hospital clinical team.
  • Monitors the number of assigned patients authorized by facility policy, system capability, and established staffing protocols.
  • Maintains uninterrupted observation during the scheduled assignment and follows established handoff, coverage, and escalation procedures when transitioning coverage or taking a break.
  • Uses calm, respectful verbal redirection within the approved scope of practice when a patient engages in at-risk behavior, as directed by facility policy and the RN care plan.
  • Immediately notifies the assigned nurse or designated clinical staff of patient needs, unusual behavior or verbalizations, equipment concerns, loss of visual or audible connection, and potentially dangerous behavior or conversation.
  • Responds rapidly and thoroughly to emergencies by following approved emergency notification and escalation procedures. Does not delay notification while attempting to resolve a clinical or safety concern independently.
  • Completes observation documentation and reports at assigned times, accurately recording observations and communications in accordance with hospital and company policy.
  • Participates in handoff of pertinent information and observed behavior at the start and completion of each assignment, and communicates changes in patient status as required.
  • Collaborates to identify and report patient safety issues, including visible environmental hazards observed through the monitoring system. Escalates concerns to the appropriate nurse or designated clinical staff.
  • Performs required equipment checks and promptly reports technology, connectivity, camera, audio, or workstation issues that could affect safe observation coverage.
  • Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality by using only approved systems, workstations, and communication channels. Does not record, photograph, share, or access patient information except as required to perform assigned duties.
  • Operates within the defined non-clinical role. Does not provide clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, medication administration, physical intervention, or other nursing care.
  • Interacts hospitably, cheerfully, and supportively with staff, patients, visitors, and work colleagues.
  • Respects hospital and company property and follows all security, access-control, information-protection, confidentiality, patient rights, HIPAA, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Takes suggestions and direction from supervisors and hospital staff. Complies with all department and hospital educational programs and required competencies.
  • Always behaves in a professional manner. Assists other associates as necessary and responds to direction as provided.

Job Qualifications:

  • Any other unit-specific training required by Hospital partner such as but not limited to, the hospital partners new hire orientation.

*Training and certifications required for this role, including BLS/CPR, will be provided by Xanitos.
