Virtual Recovery Coach information

What is a virtual recovery coach?

A Virtual Recovery Coach provides remote support to individuals recovering from addiction or other life challenges. They offer guidance, encouragement, and accountability through video calls, phone calls, or messaging. Their role is to help clients set goals, develop coping strategies, and stay motivated during their recovery journey. While they are not therapists, they provide emotional support and connect clients with additional resources if needed.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a virtual recovery coach?

To excel as a Virtual Recovery Coach, you should have a solid understanding of addiction recovery principles, experience in peer support or counseling, and often a relevant certification such as Certified Recovery Peer Specialist (CRPS) or Certified Peer Recovery Coach (CPRC). Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure messaging systems, and documentation tools is typically required. Exceptional active listening, empathy, and motivational interviewing skills help set top performers apart in this role. These abilities are essential for building trust with clients, providing effective support, and maintaining client engagement in a virtual recovery setting.

What are common challenges faced by virtual recovery coaches, and how can they be addressed?

Virtual Recovery Coaches often encounter challenges such as building rapport through digital platforms, maintaining client engagement remotely, and addressing a range of emotional or technical barriers clients may face. To overcome these hurdles, effective use of video conferencing, clear communication, and ongoing professional development in virtual coaching techniques are essential. Many organizations offer training and peer supervision to help coaches adapt to virtual environments and ensure best practices are followed. Building a supportive team environment and leveraging digital tools for collaboration can also help coaches feel connected and empowered, enabling more consistent and impactful client outcomes.

Paramedic for At Home Sobriety Service

New York, NY • On-site

Part-time

Re-posted 13 days ago

Job description

Paramedic – In-Home Sobriety Coach (Evening Shift)

Position Summary

We are launching a new service! We are seeking compassionate, dependable, and highly professional Paramedics to provide in-home sobriety support for individuals seeking income in home recovery for mild-moderate alcohol use disorder. This is a unique, patient-centered role that combines medical observation, encouragement, and crisis recognition during the highest-impact period to avoid relapse—the first week of sobriety. Working alongside a virtual supervising physician, you will provide evening support in patients' homes while physician-directed medication treatment (e.g., naltrexone and/or disulfiram) is initiated and managed.

This is not an emergency transport position. Instead, you'll serve as a trusted recovery coach, safety monitor, and a medical professional helping patients remain safe, comfortable, and committed to sobriety during the critical early stages of recovery. No talk therapy experience needed.

Typical Schedule: 5:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Responsibilities

  • Visit patients in their homes during scheduled evening shifts.
  • Provide supportive coaching, encouragement, accountability, and companionship during early recovery.
  • Work with remote medical director to monitor patients for signs of alcohol withdrawal, or other medical concerns, and promptly communicate changes to the supervising physician.
  • Reinforce physician-directed treatment plans and medication adherence.
  • Educate patients and families regarding recovery strategies, relapse prevention, hydration, nutrition, and sleep hygiene.
  • Assist patients in managing cravings using evidence-based behavioral techniques.
  • Encourage engagement in recovery activities, support meetings, and healthy evening routines.
  • Document patient interactions accurately within the electronic medical record.
  • Escalate concerns appropriately, including arranging emergency evaluation when indicated.
  • Maintain professionalism, patient confidentiality, and a calm, reassuring presence in the home.

Qualifications

Required

  • Current EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P) license in good standing.
  • Minimum one year of paramedic experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Comfortable working independently in patients' homes.
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel locally.
  • Strong documentation skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, compassionate, and professional during emotionally challenging situations.
  • While unlikely, comfortable administering IN/IM Lorazepam/Diazepam and recognizing opioid overdose when clinically indicated.

Preferred

  • Experience working with patients with substance use disorders.
  • Prior experience in behavioral health, addiction medicine, community paramedicine, emergency medicine, or critical care.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications.

Ideal Candidate

You are someone who understands that recovery is about more than medication. You are calm under pressure, genuinely enjoy helping people, and can build rapport with individuals who may be anxious, discouraged, or struggling with cravings. You recognize early signs of medical deterioration while providing compassionate support that helps patients successfully navigate their first week of sobriety.

What We Offer

  • Meaningful work with a mission-driven team.
  • Opportunity to make a measurable impact in patients' lives.
  • Physician support and clinical collaboration.
  • Predictable, relaxing evening schedule.
  • Competitive compensation.
  • Training in evidence-based addiction medicine and recovery support.
  • Opportunity to help shape an innovative model of in-home addiction care.

About Our Program

Our program combines physician-directed medication treatment—including medications such as naltrexone and disulfiram (Antabuse)—with in-home support during the first week of sobriety. Patients receive ongoing medical management while a dedicated sobriety coach provides structured evening support during the period when cravings and relapse risk are often greatest. Our goal is to help patients safely establish lasting recovery while remaining in the comfort of their own home.

Note: The original requirement listed "intranasal naltrexone." If you intended intranasal naloxone (Narcan)—which is the standard medication carried by paramedics for opioid overdose—I updated the description accordingly. There is no approved intranasal formulation of naltrexone. If your program is using a different protocol, I can adjust the posting to reflect that.
