Description

Registered Nurse | Ambulatory Surgical Center
Full Time - 80 hrs. Biweekly
Monday - Friday Rotating Shifts between the hours of 6:15am - 5pm

Meritus Health is seeking an experienced and versatile Registered Nurse to join our Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) and work as part of a collaborative, multi-specialty surgical team.

Our ASC provides care to both adult and pediatric patients across a variety of surgical specialties, including ENT, gynecology, general surgery, cosmetic and plastic surgery, and other outpatient procedures. This is a unique opportunity for an RN who enjoys variety, thrives in a fast-paced surgical environment, and wants to remain clinically engaged throughout the entire perioperative experience.

Unlike roles focused on one phase of surgical care, our ASC RNs are cross-trained and rotate throughout Pre-Op, the Operating Room, PACU, and Pre-Admission Testing (PAT). You'll have the opportunity to build relationships across the surgical team while maintaining a broad and diverse perioperative skill set.

What You'll Do:

As an ASC RN, you won't be limited to just one area. You'll rotate throughout the surgical center and support patients from preparation for surgery through recovery.

Pre-Admission Testing (PAT)

  • Complete preoperative nursing assessments and review patient health histories
  • Review medications, allergies, diagnostic testing, and other clinical information in preparation for surgery
  • Provide preoperative education and instructions to patients and families
  • Identify potential clinical concerns and collaborate with anesthesia, surgeons, and other members of the care team to ensure patients are appropriately prepared for their procedures

Pre-Op

  • Prepare adult and pediatric patients for surgery
  • Complete assessments, verify documentation, and ensure surgical readiness
  • Initiate IV access and administer medications as appropriate
  • Educate and support patients and families before procedures
  • Collaborate closely with anesthesia providers, surgeons, and OR staff

Operating Room / Circulator

  • Serve as the circulating RN during surgical procedures
  • Coordinate patient care and maintain patient safety throughout the intraoperative period
  • Complete surgical safety checks, documentation, counts, positioning, and other circulating responsibilities
  • Maintain sterile practice and ensure compliance with perioperative standards
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team across multiple specialties and procedures

PACU

  • Provide Phase I and/or Phase II postoperative nursing care
  • Assess airway, respiratory status, hemodynamic stability, pain, nausea, and surgical recovery
  • Administer medications and interventions according to patient needs
  • Recognize and respond quickly to changes in patient condition

What the job is really like:

  • Variety is a major part of this role. You may work in PAT, Pre-Op, the OR, or PACU depending on the needs of the surgical center
  • You’ll care for patients across multiple specialties rather than focusing on one surgical service line
  • You’ll work with both adult and pediatric populations, making strong assessment and communication skills essential
  • ENT experience is particularly important due to the patient population and procedures performed within the center
  • You’ll work closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, nurses, and other clinical professionals as part of a highly collaborative team
  • ASC nursing requires efficiency without sacrificing safety, quality, or the patient experience
  • Patient turnover can be rapid, so strong organization, prioritization, and communication are essential
  • You’ll need to be comfortable transitioning between different roles, patient populations, and surgical specialties
  • Successful nurses in this environment are flexible, clinically confident, team-oriented, and willing to step in wherever they are needed

Work Environment and Demands:

  • Fast-paced, multi-specialty ambulatory surgical environment
  • Care provided to both pediatric and adult surgical patients
  • Frequent standing, walking, positioning, and movement throughout the surgical center
  • Ability to safely assist with patient positioning and transfers
  • Requires sustained attention to patient safety, infection prevention, sterile technique, and surgical protocols
  • Regular collaboration with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nursing colleagues, surgical technologists, and other members of the perioperative team
  • Requires flexibility to rotate among PAT, Pre-Op, OR/Circulator, and PACU based on patient volume and operational needs

What Success Looks Like:

  • Patients receive safe, efficient, compassionate care throughout their entire surgical experience
  • You are comfortable and competent working across PAT, Pre-Op, OR, and PACU
  • You confidently care for both adult and pediatric surgical patients
  • You adapt easily between different surgical specialties, procedures, and patient needsYou anticipate the needs of your patients and surgical team
  • You communicate effectively with patients, families, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and colleagues
  • Surgical safety, infection prevention, documentation, and regulatory standards are consistently met
  • You contribute to efficient patient flow and on-time surgical operations
  • You are known as a dependable, flexible team member who can step into multiple areas of the ASC
  • Most importantly, you help create a surgical experience where patients and families feel safe, informed, and well cared for from pre-admission through discharge

Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program; ASN requires. BSN preferred
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3 years of RN experience in an Ambulatory Surgery Center, ambulatory procedural setting, or Operating Room
    • Prior ENT experience preferred
    • Prior pediatric nursing experience preferred
    • Experience across multiple phases of perioperative care strongly preferred
  • Licensure & Certification:
    • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in Maryland
    • Current BLS certification
    • ACLS and PALS certification required or must be obtained within the designated timeframe
    • Perioperative or specialty nursing certification preferred
