Virtual Optometry information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual Optometrist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Optometrist, you need a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, state licensure, and a solid understanding of ocular diseases and vision care. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, digital diagnostic tools, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is typically required. Excellent communication skills, empathy, and adaptability are essential for building rapport with patients remotely and delivering clear care instructions. These skills ensure accurate virtual assessments, patient satisfaction, and compliance with regulatory standards in remote optometric practice.

What are some common challenges faced by virtual optometrists when providing remote eye care, and how can they be addressed?

Virtual optometrists often encounter challenges such as limited ability to perform certain in-depth eye examinations remotely and difficulties in assessing subtle ocular conditions without specialized equipment. To address these, virtual optometrists typically use high-quality video platforms, leverage patient-submitted images, and work closely with in-person clinics for follow-up care when necessary. Strong communication skills and clear instructions to patients are essential for obtaining accurate histories and ensuring effective management. Additionally, staying updated on telehealth technology and maintaining compliance with privacy regulations is crucial for success in this evolving field.

Both Virtual Optometry and Telehealth Optometry involve remote eye care services performed by licensed optometrists. The main difference lies in terminology; 'Virtual Optometry' often emphasizes online eye exams and consultations, while 'Telehealth Optometry' broadly covers all remote eye health services. Both roles require similar credentials and are used within the same industry to expand access to eye care remotely.

What is virtual optometry?

Virtual optometry refers to the use of digital technology and telehealth platforms to provide eye care services remotely. This can include virtual eye exams, consultations, follow-ups, and even some vision screenings conducted via video calls or specialized apps. Patients can connect with licensed optometrists from the comfort of their homes, making eye care more accessible, especially for those in remote areas. However, some tests and treatments may still require in-person visits to ensure comprehensive eye health assessment.

Part-Time Optometrist (Westside Optometry) - Petaluma, CA

Vision Service Plan

Petaluma, CA โ€ข On-site

Posted 14 days ago

Job description

At Westside Optometry in Petaluma, California, you'll have an incredible opportunity to help patients protect and preserve the gift of sight while making a meaningful difference each day. If you're committed to a career in compassionate, personalized eye care and are looking for a long-term opportunity with room to grow, this role offers the chance to join a trusted practice just as its associate doctor of 29 years prepares to retire at the end of summer 2026, with onboarding expected to begin in July or August 2026.
Why join us?
Westside Optometry, a long-standing and trusted practice in Petaluma, has been serving the community with professional, personalized vision care since Dr. Karen Griffith purchased the practice in 1989, with roots that may make it one of the oldest optometry practices in the area. Known for seeing generations of patients and voted Best of Petaluma and Petaluma's People's Choice for the past six years, including 2026, the practice is proud to offer comprehensive general optometry services along with medical eye care and dry eye treatment, with plans to expand into myopia management. With a strong commitment to continuing exceptional patient care, this opportunity is ideal for an optometrist who values mentorship, partnership potential, and the chance to eventually take over a well-established, patient-centered practice over the next 5 to 10 years.
What you'll do:
As a part-time optometrist, you'll deliver comprehensive eye exams and personalized care for a diverse patient base in a well-equipped, high-tech practice. You'll diagnose and treat eye conditions, prescribe corrective lenses and treatment plans, provide pre- and post-operative care, and educate patients on long-term eye health. With access to digital refracting lanes, anterior and posterior segment photography, topography, HARK, OCT, and virtual visual fields, you'll have the tools to provide quality care efficiently. Full exams are typically scheduled every 30 minutes, with contact lens checks and follow-ups worked into the day, resulting in about 10 to 12 exams and 14 to 16 total patients daily. This part-time, on-site role currently supports 1.5 days per week, with flexibility to grow to 2 days or more.
Who you are:
You're a patient-focused optometrist with a Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited school, therapeutic certification, and licensure to practice in California. You bring strong clinical skills in comprehensive eye exams, diagnostic testing, treatment planning, and prescribing corrective lenses, along with the communication skills to clearly explain findings and care recommendations. Detail-oriented, collaborative, and committed to continuous learning, you thrive in a team setting and are excited to help the practice deliver exceptional care while continuing to grow its reputation in the community. Experience in a clinical or retail optometry setting is a plus.
Why you'll love Petaluma:
Petaluma offers the perfect blend of small-town charm and Northern California convenience. Located in southern Sonoma County along the Petaluma River, the city is known for its walkable historic downtown, beautifully preserved architecture, local boutiques, acclaimed restaurants, and vibrant farm-to-table food scene. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy nearby parks, trails, and easy access to the Sonoma Coast, while wine country experiences, breweries, and weekend getaways are all close at hand. With San Francisco just a short drive away, Petaluma is an ideal place to build a career and enjoy a well-rounded lifestyle.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Optometry license in the state of California

Preferred Specialties:
  • Dry Eye, Myopia management, and Scleral contact lenses

Interested applicants can send a Curriculum Vitae, a copy of their CA Optometry License, and a brief cover letter describing their interest and availability directly to: drgriffith@westsideoptometry.net!
