Job description

Virtual Patient Safety Observer, 8S Orthopedics

Hourly Pay Range: $17.05 - $23.85 - The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.

Position Highlights:

  • Position: Virtual Patient Safety Observer, 8S Orthopedics
  • Location: Northwest Community Hospital - Arlington Heights, IL
  • Full Time | 36 hours/week
  • Hours: 3 days - 12 hour shifts Monday - Friday, 7pm - 7am, with rotating weekends and holidays

A Brief Overview:

  • Monitors patients remotely via video monitor or at the bedside to ensure patient safety while under observation.
  • Provides continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients.
  • First line of action is to verbally redirect the patient from engaging in at-risk behaviors.
  • Summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance.
  • Knowledgeable and supportive of patient and institutional confidentiality and related hospital policies.

What You Will Do:

  • Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the video monitoring software.
  • Maintains visual observation of patient at all times, either monitoring at the bedside within an arm's length of assigned patient or using video monitors in the virtual patient observation unit.
  • Verbally redirects patients at the bedside or over digital two-way audio device that is in patient room. Patient Safety Observer immediately summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance or to alert to an emergency situation.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide the appropriate observation to the patient population requiring observation.
  • Participates in report with on-coming Patient Safety Observer when arriving for shift, and upon completion of shift. Reviews pertinent information and behaviors.
  • Does not provide any nursing care duties (e.g. vital signs, toileting, ambulation, acuity of daily living), unless they are oriented and authorized to direct patient care.
  • Provides patient with explanations as necessary but does not counsel or provide opinions.
  • Provides floor staff with information in a timely fashion when patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others. Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues. Assures patient environment safety. Seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard from room and reports findings to appropriate staff members.
  • Demonstrates safe work practice and attitude, follows safety rules, works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participates in organizational and department safety programs.
  • Maintains patient dignity and privacy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Capable of continuous monitoring of up to 16 patients on one monitor at one time and remains alert at all times while on duty
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients using a microphone and headset
  • Ability to communicate with hospital staff and respond quickly to patient behavioral changes
  • Ability to use discretion and courtesy when working with patients, visitors, and staff
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office applications
  • Efficiency in multitasking and able to prioritize simultaneous situations

What You Will Need:

  • Education: High School Diploma/GED, required.
  • Certification: Certified Nursing Assistant - Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), required.
  • Other Skills: Strong customer service and interpersonal skills required.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and remain attentive to patient.
  • Ability to react quickly in emergency situations, to give verbal redirection to patients and to alert nursing staff as needed.
  • Proficiency in both verbal and written communications.
