How much do virtual mechanical engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average yearly pay for virtual mechanical engineering in Kansas is $91,752.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $72,700.00 and $112,800.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a virtual mechanical engineer?

A Virtual Mechanical Engineer is a professional who designs, analyzes, and improves mechanical systems and components remotely, often using computer-aided design (CAD) and simulation software. They collaborate with clients and teams online to develop prototypes, run simulations, and solve engineering problems without being physically present at a specific location. This role is ideal for remote work environments and can support industries such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and more.

How do virtual mechanical engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a remote work setting?

Virtual mechanical engineers often work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including product designers, electrical engineers, and project managers, using digital collaboration tools like CAD platforms, cloud-based project management software, and video conferencing. Effective communication and proactive documentation are key to ensuring alignment on project milestones and design iterations. Regular virtual meetings, shared design files, and clear version control help maintain productivity despite not being co-located. This collaborative approach enables virtual engineers to contribute meaningfully while balancing the flexibility of remote work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, CAD modeling, and often a bachelor's degree in engineering. Familiarity with simulation software like ANSYS or SolidWorks, as well as remote collaboration tools, is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for success in a virtual environment. These skills and qualities ensure accurate design, efficient teamwork, and timely project delivery in a remote setting.

What is the difference between Virtual Mechanical Engineering vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectVirtual Mechanical EngineeringMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in mechanical engineering, CAD certifications, and familiarity with simulation softwareRequires a degree in mechanical engineering or related field, with CAD and design software proficiency
Work EnvironmentPrimarily remote or virtual, using CAD, simulation, and collaboration toolsOften office-based or on-site, focusing on designing and testing mechanical components
Industry UsageUsed across industries for remote design, simulation, and analysis tasksCommonly employed in manufacturing, automotive, and product design sectors

Virtual Mechanical Engineering involves remote design, simulation, and analysis using digital tools, while Mechanical Design Engineers typically work on-site designing and testing physical components. Both roles require similar credentials but differ mainly in work environment and application focus.

Argus Consulting is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our headquarters in Overland Park, KS. This role is ideal for a mid-level mechanical engineer who is already leading projects and people โ€” or is ready to step fully into a Lead Engineer role in the near future.

This position blends hands-on technical expertise with project leadership and people mentorship. Youโ€™ll lead small to mid-sized projects, guide junior engineers, and play a key role in shaping technical quality and team development. Over time, this role is expected to grow into formal people leadership with direct reports.

We are especially interested in candidates with experience in fuel, fuel-adjacent, or related industrial environments, who are comfortable operating as both a technical authority and a project leader.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Lead the design and analysis of mechanical systems in compliance with applicable codes and standard
  • Act as a point of contact for clients and contractors, providing technical guidance and project updates
  • Support the development of engineering staff and contribute to long-term team growth
  • Independently manage small to mid-sized projects, including schedules, budgets, and resource allocation
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to a mixed group of engineers at varying experience levels, ensuring adherence to engineering standards
  • Perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews of engineering project deliverables
  • Develop and review project documentation including calculations, drawings, and specifications
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to solve complex technical challenges

What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in mechanical engineering (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Interest in growing into a formal Lead Engineer role with direct reports
  • 7+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required
  • Demonstrated experience leading projects and guiding other engineers
  • Strong technical background with the ability to remain hands-on when needed
  • Experience in fuel, fuel-adjacent, industrial, or similar environments strongly preferred
  • Proficiency with engineering software such as AutoCAD, AFT Fathom, or similar tools
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Clear communicator comfortable working with clients, contractors, and internal teams

Work Environment

  • Based in our Overland Park, KS headquarters
  • Occasional, project-dependent travel to client sites and meetings
  • Primarily in-office role with flexibility

Why Argus

  • Clear pathway toward Lead Engineer and people leadership opportunities
  • Stable, growing organization with a strong technical reputation
