Position Summary
The primary role of a full-time 9-month faculty is to focus on academic excellence and student success, and encourage lifelong learning by working collaboratively with College stakeholders to support the mission of the College. Full-time instructors ensure the quality and integrity of the College's academic programs through teaching, curriculum development, and College service.
This position reports directly to the Associate Dean of the Division of IT and Math.
Managing a virtual office, the faculty member will teach at various campus locations and in multiple instructional modalities (in-person, online, hybrid, and HyFlex) as needed by the department. This position includes instruction of JumpStart (high school dual enrollment) courses and teaching up to three times per week at The Pines Morgan County Campus.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Deliver up to 15 credit hours per semester / 30 annually, including morning, afternoon, evening, and/or weekend instruction.

  • Maintain a minimum of ten office hours per week dedicated to students.

  • Participate in course updates and curriculum assessment in collaboration with other IT and math faculty.
    • Assist the Chair, Program Coordinator, and Associate Dean with course development and initiatives to enhance student success.
    • Participate, as assigned, in various activities including, but not limited to tutoring, learning resources, lab support, student retention projects, committee work, campus workshops, and seminars.

  • Strengthen hybrid-flexible instruction by designing and delivering HyFlex instruction.
  • Collect assessment data as directed to ensure the quality of instruction and relevance of the curriculum.
  • Remain current in the field through maintaining certifications, professional development, and conference attendance.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and community in accordance with the core values of Blue Ridge Community & Technical College.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the operation of the institution.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • Master's Degree in Mathematics, Computer Science or closely related area with minimum 18 credit hours in graduate level mathematics.

Experience
  • Ideal candidates for the position will have experience with or an active interest in active learning and education technologies;
  • Teaching at the college or secondary level;
  • Teaching in online, synchronous, blended or HyFlex formats.
  • Experience with Student Information Systems, Learning Management Systems or other similar Higher Education software is an asset.
  • Preference given to candidates with experience in Artificial Intelligence

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to relate to others in a professional, helpful manner.
  • Excellent teamwork skills: skilled at collaborating with all areas of the College in a positive manner that supports diversity and a respectful workplace.

  • Proficiency in research, interpreting and analyzing diverse data; knowledge of how to enter, monitor, and interpret student data accurately.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects in an environment of rapid growth and change. Ability to work independently with minimal clerical support.
  • Knowledgeable in use of Word and Excel (intermediate level).
  • Understanding of the organization of public higher education systems.
  • Familiarity with issues faced by community college students, especially in rural settings. Ability to relate to a diverse population.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Solid background in adult career and social advisement.
  • Ability to analyze programs, identify solutions, and take appropriate action to resolve problems, using independent judgment and decision-making processes. Ability to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with faculty and administrators.
  • Ability to multi-task and organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion with attention to detail.
  • Commitment to following all College policies and procedures.

All faculty positions are lecturer rank with temporary classification at entry.
